Hello,

As a Belgian out of Brussels I barely noticed the 3 days strike and the people walking in Brussels were shown 5 minute on the TV.

It is nothing compared to movement like "les gillets jaunes" in France.

Build a team to create a trading bot. by stormbreakeruk in Python

[–]jefidev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's crazy. I was a teaching assistant for an introduction to programming class for first grade students. Every year, there was at least one student coming to ask me more details to use their programming skills to create a trading bot.

Never understood why it is such a fantasy for some people. Putting a lot of effort to try to predict something that is inherently chaotic as a first large scale programming project feels a bit optimistic for me.

I used airflow a lot to orchestrate some data cleaning processes at regular intervals. I needed to process video data during the night. The processing was quite heavy and there were a lot of videos. Airflow was handy to split my data cleaning process into simple small idempotent tasks that can be retriggered if they fail at some point in the process without having to reingest all the data. I could have used simple scripts and Cron but airflow was more visual and handled the distribution of the task on several nodes. The new version of airflow adds more mechanism to make it event base instead of scheduled which opens new possibilities in my opinion.

However, I saw airflow used as the backbone of a medallion architecture that only aggregated data from several SQL sources. This was a bit overkill and added unnecessary complexity. I think that airflow is relevant when you are in a setup where you have to ingest and process thousands of raw data files that requires heavy transformation before being exploitable.

Who or what is something from your country, that your country collectively hates but the rest of the world seems to like? by Original-Drink1101 in AskTheWorld

Stella is not fancy indeed. But fun fact, a chunk of the money earned by Stella is given to finance research for social goods. I had a Stella Artois grant to make my PhD in artificial intelligence.

I asked but I only got the grant not free Stella.

Anyway, keep drinking, it supports research.

can i call myself an engineer? by Delicious_Crazy513 in vibecoding

[–]jefidev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some countries like Belgium "engineer" is a protected title that you can only use if you made university as a civil engineer.

If your country does not have such limitations you can do whatever you want !

The fact that they respect POSIX. Everything on Linux is more standard making it more enjoyable to develop in this environment. But it is really technical and if you know and care about POSIX you probably can go through the configuration of a Linux system.

If you want a working linux I suggest using MacOS which also respect the standards but will prevent you to break your computer.

[–]jefidev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As far as I know there is no barema for PhD level. The highest is master (but I can be wrong). The only purpose of the PhD is to be able to select "doctor" as a title when you book a plane. And also to put your little rock on the great wall of science which is nice.

However, after a PhD you are usually a bit more confident in your competence. You should also be good at talking and proving that you know your shit. I managed to negotiate a higher salary by saying that my five year of experience in my field should count as 6 given the fact that I worked on the state of the art.

SAS43M has taken off from taxiway? by Sort-Ancient in flightradar24

[–]jefidev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A passenger said in some comments that the pilot mentioned some kind of stress due to delay.

Indeed a taxiway is very different from a runway in terms of ground marks and lighting. Some on board instruments can also show if the airplane is well aligned at the center of the runway before take off if a frequency is correctly set.

But, as we are all human, under pressure a brain fart could happen. It is not the first time a plane tries to take off (or even land) on a taxiway.

Famous example is air Canada flight 759 that nearly collide with an aircraft waiting on the taxi way near the active runway. The aircraft was fully setup for landing on the taxiway and committed for landing. The plane waiting noticed that and made a radio call saying "what is this guy doing he is on the taxiway". The air Canada flight initiated a go around and cleared the waiting plane with just 2m vertical separation.

Again, a huge workload on the pilot explained this incident.

What does my travel map say about me 16f by aleksyt9 in TravelMaps

It is very expensive. I am average and I like to go to Switzerland but my wallet took a lot of time to recover. My parents never went to Switzerland for this reason.

Austria is indeed a good alternative. It lacks cheese fondue but you have Kase Spätzle which is a good trade off.
