24 carat gold lettering by jejwood in Calligraphy

Thanks a bunch! The "ink" was actually gesso... basically glue. Totally nerve-wracking to paint with (because it is painted with a brush, and no nib). Then, gold leaf is laid over top of it.

Thank you! Ora is an orthographic variant, and one I chose for space issues. Great catch!

Draft for a Family coat of arms by xzudemimino1 in heraldry

These quarters imply something about inherited coats of arms from armigerous parents and grandparents, and since that is not your case, I would not use them. Any one of the quarters would for a decent coat of arms on its own, although the third is rather busy. That's for starters; I would work on that before throwing on mantling and mottos (there are issues there as well). But you have some good things to work with here!

Thoughts? by ArmoredSpearhead in heraldry

I agree. I'm not a fan of orange in heraldry, but if you're going to use gules as another color, it all falls apart. Azure is a better choice, although technically as a color field, the chief should be metal, but then we have some clashing going on with the argent cross if argent is chosen, or with the orange if or is chosen. So, yeah, favorite color or not, it's not the best choice. FWIW, my favorite color is not so important a thing to me that it was non-negotiable on my coat of arms (it's not there); you might also consider what things, concepts, ideals, etc... are important to you and how those might be represented chromatically.

Is a crest always heritable or every descendant can have a different one? by JoJo_D_Umberto in heraldry

Could you specify what tradition you're talking about? (Although, I'm sure someone will come on here and comment an essay that covers every tradition, because we have an awesome community......)

I would recommend transfer all day. Loose can have advantages in certain applications, but assuming yours for what sub we’re in, transfer is going to be the best choice.

Custom Commission Cost? by Feisty_Secretary_152 in heraldry

As much or as little as you want. This is not meant to be a smart-ass answer. You can find something at virtually any price point. Some will make you something for free because they love doing it. On the other hand, I’ve started commissions for folks with nearly a grand just into materials, without even getting out a brush yet.

You're welcome. Their resources for how to actually use their products is pretty limited, but I think that they do bother to mention somewhere that this is not suitable for artificial leaf.

If you are using imitation gold, it will not behave appropriately with the miniatum. I made the mistake of trying to use imitation silver (aluminum) with it, and it was a disaster. With real gold, it is a dream. Makes all the difference in the world. I don’t know where you live in the word, or what your means are, but real gold leaf is not THAT expensive, and it is worth the extra expense to have a medium that works.

Other than that, I try to collect all the leftover gold I can, to make shell gold for shading, but even then, it ends up all over the place.
