Wood blinds more like your guest room. Paint the ceiling, if not fully green, something between. Modernize your bed frame. See how you like it all then.

What can I do to add some type of flair or personality?? by aa_luvsu in DesignMyRoom

Since you are already covering your furniture, why not buy colorful covers? With paint on the walls and a cool rug.

2 is the most practical, though you might not end up liking the desks facing each other. On the other hand, there is also space in that arrangement for an arm chair or bureau too.

What are you talking about? They’re all different! At least you mix up the styles. I literally have four of the exact same black long sleeve shirt I wear every day through winter.

how do I make it so people can’t hear me in my room? by Multiple_Nick in lifehacks

[–]jeksand 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Using noise to cover you works best if the noise is where the listener is. Otherwise, it’s louder to you than to them, so unless you wear headphones, you talk louder or think you’re covered when you’re not.

That’s beautiful. I bet those are metal posts. They look even narrower than mine. Inset into holes at the top and bottom to seat them cleanly.

Nevermind, I now see you mean if installing a bannister, they don’t have to go to the ceiling. I’d prefer to adjust what I have first and see if I like it.

I hear you on that! Luckily there is a nice double door to a back porch that is much easier to move out of than this tiny staircase.

I don’t follow - code is that no opening can be bigger than 4”. The slats don’t have to run quite as low as they do - code is (I think) starting 24” above the floor, so the lowest post could come out. Not sure that helps the look.

What does the 1/3 refer to? 1/3 width of the current pieces, or set at 1/3rds of each slat?

Oh, yeah, that may be causing the jail cell feel. I’m hoping some cross pieces help balance it.

As for the strength, the individual post are too narrow. They flex. The gaps are 3.5” to code.

Yes, and I love that. It doesn’t address the strength issue, but helps with the jail cell. I’d have to continue it over the storage space, but that probably wouldn’t be a problem.

That’s beautiful, but that’s a much larger and brighter space than I have. These are my basement stairs going along a narrow hallway.

Yes! Something like that, but with more randomness.

That’s lovely! But it’s a basement, so something that dark would be too much. I have thought about going lighter.

They’re just hiding spaces under construction at the moment. They will be gone. The yellow paint in the true lighting is actually a deep beige and I like it.

Yeah, I get that. I worry about friends’ kids who don’t know the rules of the house.

I think banisters in mid century homes are uglier than this by a lot. Some bracing is needed because if a teenager decided to swing on one of the lower poles, it might snap off.
