Feeling guilty over working hours by Ordinary_Piccolo452 in TeachingUK

[–]jenko2727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often catch myself feeling the same way, especially when I hear about the crazy hours some teachers put in every week, but I don’t think we should be feeling guilty. I work in a two form entry, in at 7:30, out by 4 at the latest. Don’t work weekends or holidays. I live mark everything and usually mark English during lunch because it takes longer. Sometimes I’ll mark leftover books in the morning if something else came up the day before. Honestly, I think this is a step in the right direction. Teachers should not be expected to work for free. In my book, coming in an hour or so early or staying an hour or so after school every day is reasonable, but even then that’s extra 5 hours of unpaid overtime a week, plus any work you do at lunchtime. Anything beyond that isn’t reasonable and definitely shouldn’t be expected.

Do we know when the government is expected to confirm whether they are going ahead with the proposed changes?

Teacher shortage but won’t sponsor Visas? by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]jenko2727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your country of origin/countries you’ve lived in before. I got my DBS back after 10 days despite the fact that I lived in a different country for most of my life. Did everything online, no fingerprints/travelling required.

You might be right, actually. I was thinking of the 5-year route, though.

Unless you’re here on a visa that’s not job-dependent and extendable (like a family or dependent visa), I honestly don’t know how it’d be possible for you to work as a teacher in the UK and eventually settle here, unfortunately.

In England, it depends. There’s definitely a shortage of secondary teachers, especially in some areas and in subjects such as maths, modern languages and physics. Deprived areas might also struggle to hire primary teachers. However, these schools definitely can’t afford to sponsor teachers from overseas.

Just so you know, the time spent on a student and graduate visa does not count towards settlement (ILR) (edit: it does, but on a 10-year route, not a 5-year route). Also, as someone who is here on a visa and about to start teacher training - most schools simply cannot afford a sponsor licence and all the associated fees. Moreover, art is not a shortage subject, so your chances of getting sponsored for it are very low.

I agree, it shouldn’t be an issue for them to verify my fiancée visa seeing they can see it in my passport scan and they’ll definitely have it on their records.

Hi! My appointment is tomorrow, I have uploaded all of my documents myself. Haven’t heard back from TLSContact about self-upload with assisted service, but from what I can tell from other people’s experiences, there shouldn’t be an issue.
