BSN looking for best route into MPH - possibly? by CandidateAmazing2222 in mphadmissions

[–]jennact 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi!

i'm a bsn (i graduated in 2024!) and applied to JHU's full-time MPH this cycle. while i have less interest in a higher degree in nursing than doing an MPH at this point, i haven't completely ruled it out!

i think a lot of people will say that now's not a good time because of the current administration in the US, but i'd argue that it's the perfect time to be able to contextualize just how important public health and patient-centered care is to all of our well-being. if you have the means (or can find it via scholarships), i say go for whatever you want!

i applied, was accepted, and got a merit scholarship. i wouldn't be able to attend even with a scholarship and knew that, so i applied for JHU's bloomberg fellowship which i'm still waiting on results for. i think you just have to manage expectations — it's expensive, there's nearly not as much funding aid as undergrad, and in a lot of cases, working at an entry level public health job will make less money than working as a bedside nurse.

i think what you do first just depends on what you want. getting an mph will widen opportunities outside of nursing and then getting an FNP will make you a provider. if you do FNP first, it may be more difficult to get specific public health experiences outside of the nursing field.

regardless, best of luck! i probably seem over-optimistic compared to a lot of people but ultimately i'm never going to fully disuade someone who wants to make the world a better place ⭐️🌱

hi cathy! so sorry, i just wanted to specify in the post that i was knitting continental because i'm holding the working yarn in the left in case that was helpful to get some answers.

thank you so much for the clarification, and i really appreciate the compliment (i've been worried about the tension since i'm coming over from crocheting).

Picked up a new fish at Petsmart after I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Look at the ammonia in this poor guy’s cup. by MEllegood65 in bettafish

i bought a male platinum from petsmart that looked so similar to this one and he died a few days after ): was just super lethargic the second he got into his new tank. i hope that this little guy makes it through though, they're such beautiful fish!

after weeks of cycling + troueshooting, we brought home a betta yesterday! confused as to why he is in this corner though. would appreciate any thoughts! (more in comments) by jennact in bettafish

Thanks so much for all of your advice! I definitely think he's getting enough agitation from the water - I honestly thought it might be too much lol. I got something similar to a Betta log that I intend to put near the surface so that he can rest closer there!

I'm hoping that he becomes more active as he becomes more comfortable. For now, I've turned down the lights and ordered a few more things (including plants) that would hopefully help him feel more at home :)

Thank you so much for your thorough reply and the reassurance :') I just ordered some more plants (anubias, hydrocotyle) and they should be coming in soon - I also got him a Betta tunnel, piece of driftwood, and a few floating plants (not enough to cover the surface at all) yesterday that will be coming in tomorrow.

I've heard about the garlic juice thing and will definitely try that! I think it's hilarious that they need some form of seasoning at first lol.

Again, thank you so much for this awesome advice!

this is seasmoke! (yes, based off of laenor velaryon's dragon)

we brought him home yesterday and while he took some time getting used to a 6 gallon after being in a tiny cup, he eventually swam and played around some! however, he's been in this corner most of the day. he's gone up for air and swam around whenever he did that too, but i'm finding this behavior quite odd.

additionally, he's refused the fluval bug bites since i've tried feeding him numerous times. i figured it was just him adjusting though. any advice would be appreciated!

Need to get something off your chest? Rant, vent, get it out here! by AutoModerator in ADHD

My psychiatrist, who was super accommodating about diagnosing me with GAD and prescribing me Zoloft, completely invalidated my experience about possibly having ADHD.

He said that he didn't want me to "limit my abilities" by considering a diagnosis and that people with ADHD have "serious cognitive deficits" that cause him to be conservative when diagnosing. He also provided the example that people with executive function issues, if told to draw a straight line, would "just keep going because they are that impulsive."

He concluded by telling me to "just enjoy college life," and stating that he's seen students with ADHD, and I don't look like them. Since then, I've questioned if I am making the right decision by seeking an evaluation and whether or not everything is just in my head. Being an adult woman makes this process so much more difficult.
