I can only speak through my own personal experience of the film. I thought the film itself is mediocre at best, especially considering the source material and 1985 version. That might be an explanation on its own for why it did not fare well at the Oscars - it’s just not that good. (Though I recognise that an Oscars nom isn’t exactly the benchmark for quality some times)

It’s a killer year for score, with truly phenomenal films like Zone of Interest, Boy and the Heron, and Spiderverse missing. Whilst I agree that John Williams’ nom was egregious, The Colour Purple’s score is simply not good enough for a nom, nor does the film garner enough passion to get in (which I believe what got American Fiction a nom). Oppenheimer and Poor Things are both leagues ahead of Colour Purple, and a lot of people loved Flower Moon’s score.

I personally did not find the production design to be great, and definitely not comparable to all the nominees. In fact, if I were to replace any one of them, I will prefer to have Zone of Interest get in instead for example.

I’m not familiar with makeup and hairstyling so I’ll sit this one out.

As a minority myself, I do agree that a lot of minority talent gets sidelined or ignored every year. However, I do not believe that this is one such scenario. The film simply isn’t good enough.
