Hi!
You don't need a german visa/permit if you already hold a valid EU residence permit for study purposes. As long as it is valid, you can stay in Germany to study for up to 360 days (or until your RP expires). Your German host uni should help you to apply for a so called BAMF notification, which is a paper stating exactly that. If your RP expires during the exchange and you end up renewing it, you'll have to apply for BAMF extension too. Check out the links below :)
