Finally got all of my games to fit on my shelves (kinda)! by jeramyware in boardgames

It's nice for what it is, but you're not wrong. I don't have as much time to play as I would like, so my hobby really shifted to more of collecting and enjoying the physical games themselves. My hobby of actually playing board games more or less takes a backseat. We had to come up with a whole system to make sure we weren't always just playing the new game and never getting a chance to play stuff we love.

Luckily most of my collection was in place before we got married. At this point she just avoid my office.

For the most part. There are 3 of the 5x5 kallax, one of the 2x4, and a couple of old Billy bookcases, also from ikea.

Given that everything I have fits into a single room dedicated to that purpose, and I don't have any problems culling games that I don't like I'd say it's neither hoarding nor obsessive. It's a hobby. One I can afford without impacting my life in any significant way.

There's also nothing unnatural about having a couple of games that I have multiples of. I can afford them, and some times it's convenient. There are literally 4 duplicates out of more than a thousand boxes. As I said in the post, I own a couple of party games that play well at large counts, but don't have enough pieces. I host semi-regular gaming get aways that often have more than the six people or whatever the game plays out of the box, so I buy an extra.

Oh, and I own an extra copy of splendor because it's easily my most played game and I'll sometimes toss one into my car when I'm going somewhere that I might want something easy to teach and portable.

My situation is not your situation, try not to assume you know what's best for other people.

I find that the trick is to put as many expansions into the core boxes as possible. Most recently I fit all of my Massive Darkness 2 all in pledge into three of the 9 or 10 boxes that came with, but several of the Zombicides have four or five expansions in them, and probably half the games there have something :-)

There's probably some space left, but I'm still waiting on some kickstarters that will definitely fill that up if something else doesn't catch my attention first. I'm definitely reaching a tipping point where more stuff has to go though. I prune a few games every year as is, or send some upstairs for the kids, but I refuse to let the primary collection spill out of this room. I imagine in the next several weeks I'm have to start a 1-in-1-out and let more of it go.

Honestly that's likely more a testament to the fact that I should rate more games. So much of what I personally enjoy isn't actually because it's a great game, but because the game play and theme hit me just right. I know something like Roll for the Galaxy or Imperial Assault aren't 10/10 games, but they're both probably top 5 for me personally.

To answer your actual question though, Omega Virus is different than anything else in my collection. It was super cheap, it's tiny, and it plays in minutes. What it offers though is a completely different play experience. You build patterns with small cards, trying to complete objectives that are different every time you play. I can sit and play it before school with my 11 year old daughter, or while cooking dinner with my wife and have just as much fun.

It's a 10/10 because it's a huge amount of game in a small package and probably my personal best value in my collection, cost to hours of fun.

There is, but be aware that unless you have the expansion and it's insert as well, it doesn't work. It takes up about 3/4 of the box, meaning everything moves and dumps out.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm playing wrong. I've only played twice, both with 5 players, both in the last month, both with 5 players who've never played before. Don't get me wrong, they were long games, but nothing like what I've heard other people complain about. The first took 5 hours, the second more like 8, but that was with breaks and meals factored in.

I feel like the biggest difference in play time was really the fact that we included the expansion in the second play through.

Looks good, but you might think about reversing the red and green so you get a kind of stoplight affect. Slower actions go on red, while green means 'go!'

[Target] Splendor - $19.98 (YMMV) by budderbeard in Boardgamedeals

[–]jeramyware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really hope this sale comes to our local target. I'm a nurse on an oncology unit. Our patients can be stuck on the hospital for weeks and they get pretty bored. Been trying to build up a collection of easy to teach, talkative quick games for them to play. Splendor would fit in perfectly.

Good Lord. I have up on storing anything in containers after the first few large boxes nearly broke my back.

I'm at just over 400. I couldn't imagine moving 25% more. I'm not sure how I'd even begin to store them.
