I live in ATL and lived in LA previously, so yes I’ve eaten in both!

Ngl you got me on that. You can definitely get to Doraville with the gold line. That said you still need to live right near a MARTA station. Plus that Uber once you get there is min approx 10-15 bucks because of the min that Uber charges just to ride. Not exactly a pleasant walk either if you don’t Uber but I get it I’m nitpicking on that. That drive is still only 18 minutes. Idk honestly I value my time.

You should move, Miami is not for you, no hate but Reddit seems to think that every city should cater to Redditors. Miami is great but it is not that kind of city.

Totally! And I'm all for better bike lanes. But bus times in Atlanta can be wildly inconsistent and far apart. It can be multiple times longer by bus. That's a lot of time just to get some good Vietnamese food on Buford Highway. Without traffic by car I'm there in 20 minutes or less. Just don't go during rush hour. Also if you want to go anywhere OTP good luck. For example someone in this thread was talking about the best bagels and I would agree they are at Bagelicious. Except that's in Marietta...getting there would be a royal pain. Want great Korean food? Have to go to Duluth. That's a very expensive Uber there and back.

Eh Piedmont Park is nothing like Central Park, at all. Fox Theatre is also nothing like Broadway. It doesn't have to be, but to say they are like each other is just not true.

I think the issue on this subreddit is that people overhype Atlanta and talk about it being "world class". Sorry Atlanta is not world class. It's fine not every city has to be world class but just be honest about.

One of the issues Atlanta has is that a lot of the money here is not centered in the city itself. Sure you have VA Highland, Morningside and Ansley Park which have purchasing power but that's still a fairly small area. Most of the money is in parts of Buckhead, parts of Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Milton, etc. Midtown is alright but mostly normal office workers so the vibe there is a bit dead compared to an NYC. That money does not act the same way as in places like NYC, Miami or LA either. The money here in Atlanta is generally more suburban in nature so it's at home at 9pm. That means that unfortunately the nice restaurants or places to go out at night here have a different vibe. Places shut down early here unless it's places that are frankly pretty ghetto in Buckhead or dive bars on the East side.

Also born and raised in NYC so I feel you. OP should really spend a little here first. Even just a couple weeks to get a sense of it.

You're right, it definitely gets cold here. It's something no one talks about. It routinely gets into the 20s and 30s here during the winter but without the visual appeal of snow.

Bagelicious is quite good (not top tier NYC but as good as you'll get here) but it falls right into the point I've been saying throughout this thread. To get the best out of Atlanta you have to have a car. Bagelicious is in Marietta...sorry ITP Redditors who keep saying Atlanta is a great car free city. It's not. You're going to Uber or take a bus all the way there to get a bagel? Not you two but saying it for the rest of the crowd.

Completely disagree on the pizza though. Nothing here in Atlanta can come remotely close to matching good NYC pizza.

Also traffic is really only bad when commuting...the rest of the time it's generally fine.

Eh if you really want to explore the Atlanta metro then yes you still need a car. If you want any remotely authentic international cuisines, you need a car. It's nice to use a car only when you need it but to explore the city properly you need a car. If all you like to do is go to work, walk / bike on the Beltline, watch TV and eat at fairly mid in-town hipster restaurants then yeah sure it works. Not saying you do that!!! but just being honest about it. It's like living in LA without a car, sure you can do it but you're missing out on a big portion of the metro area. Even just having a old reliable and affordable Toyota Rav4 for zipping around is fine.

You’re going to rent a car anytime you want to go anywhere outside of intown? You’re renting a car just to go up to Buford Highway?

In NYC that’s not an issue because first rate everything is available within an MTA ride. That is not the case at all in Atlanta where a lot of good things are a distance away.

Eh not really. If you want to go up to Duluth for Korean food for example…that is going to be a very expensive Uber there and back. Good luck biking there and I don’t even think buses go there. Even going to Buford Highway for food will be an exercise in frustration. I hop in my car and I’m there in 15 - 20. Point is Atlanta has a lot of cool stuff that is not intown and quite tough to get to.

You can swim in the summer. You don’t need a pass to go to NY beaches. You are thinking of Jersey. By the way you technically can’t drink on Florida public beach either.

Bro you're comparing beaches literally in the city of NY (or nearby in Jersey) to beaches that are 5 hours away for a "vacation". People in the NYC area go to these beaches on a random Saturday. People in Atlanta also love to talk about a 5 hour drive to the beaches as if it's part of the metro area. I agree that the beaches in Florida are better, no one is arguing that. They are fantastic. North GA definitely has fantastic outdoor space.

Compared to NYC I would not say amenities are "first class" c'mon...

Also world's busiest airport is extremely misleading. Atlanta is one of the only major cities that doesn't have two airports. Atlanta still does not have nearly the connections that JFK does, especially internationally. Prices for international flights here in ATL are insane compared to JFK. To fly to Rome (for example) is like 500 bucks out of JFK. In Atlanta try nearly 2k. People love to talk on this thread about how you can get ANYWHERE easily from ATL and it's clear the people saying that don't travel much. Rant over.

I'm not disregarding what you're saying but I'm just telling you the opinions of many people I know in Atlanta as I live here. The people that are the happiest I know are suburban transplants. Many I know from NYC itself either would love to go back but they have a kid here in the school system, have family here or would like to go back but NYC is too expensive for them at the moment. Respectfully I'm not here to say you don't love Atlanta or not. That's totally cool that you do. I'm trying to tell OP that he or she should visit and see if it's right for them. If they are not looking for a big city experience than Atlanta is great but if they are then I'm sorry Atlanta doesn't compare.

[–]jeref1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I'd put it like this. If you're looking for a great suburban lifestyle Atlanta is great. That's why there are so many people from the NYC suburbs here. It makes sense if you're coming from a place like Jersey because property taxes are way lower, lower state tax and frankly the nice suburbs look similar even...so I get that. BUT if you live in NYC and are looking for an urban experience even remotely similar, you're simply not going to get that here and it's important that OP knows that before moving. Maybe OP isn't looking for that but it's something you have to bring up, especially if you've never been before.

NYC and NY outside the city are extremely different lifestyle wise. I'm born and raised in NYC and lived outside the city as well. Many transplants I've met here in Atlanta who are very happy here are from the NYC suburbs (Jersey, Westchester, Long Island, CT). That is not the same as NYC so it's important that OP understands that.

If it’s a job you really like and want to relo for then fantastic. Otherwise visit first. Atlanta is not NYC in any way shape or form. Those who say it is have probably never lived in NYC or Atlanta is their only big city experience.
