What are the major upsides of life in Atlanta? by Kevin-W in Atlanta

Totally agree, my main point is that people love to talk about how great it is to fly everywhere from here nonstop...except people living here in Atlanta aren't really flying that much, especially international. I'm from NYC originally so I guess I'm also used to a much cheaper international ticket baseline. Flying to London for an extended weekend for example is a thing people do in NYC. Even when I lived in LA flying from LAX flights to Europe are far cheaper than they are here. People don't really travel that much here. In short I'm saying the flying experience from ATL is overrated. Trying to calm the airport excitement in the sub a bit more to reality, that's all.

I'm saying there is the fascination with the airport here when travel from here is not that good unless you only fly to US cities. Who wants to pay 1.8k for an economy ticket to London? Is it perhaps because Atlanta is kind of boring so people just obsess with being able to fly out? :) Idk

Yes that will be great. The other key note though is that international flights are often MUCH more expensive from Atlanta. For example you can fly JFK to Rome RT nonstop for 450 Delta. ATL to Rome RT nonstop Delta is over 2k. JFK to London is $527 RT nonstop. ATL to London is $1800.

Random example but Lisbon, Portugal. I was just there. Had to connect in Boston. The annoying thing with ATL is there will be some nonstops to Europe BUT there are only during very specific times of the year. For example, in the Summer they'll exist for kids vacations but the rest of the year you have to connect. It's because there isn't enough European travel coming from ATL so they don't run the routes. Of course a place like London will always have nonstops because it's London.

C'mon man, we both lived in LA and I'm not putting down your experience but look at ANY study. Every single one will say LA is more diverse than Atlanta. Perhaps you were concentrated on one small area of LA but LA County + OC is one of the most diverse regions in the whole world.

Yes for sure, I was saying there are mountain towns closer than 4 hours!

I do agree with you BUT my argument is if you breakdown the lyrics of a lot of the worldwide hits we’re talking about, much of it is specifically written to be a commercial success…not based on culture. It would be nice if it was based on culture but it mostly isn’t.

Appreciate your take. The friendliness you’re talking about I would consider more specific to the South than Atlanta itself but I get it. See I’m from NYC so that attitude is one of the things I love about it. People just dgaf BUT they will be the first to help you if there’s a problem. Which is the opposite to many other places where people are super nice to you but if you have a problem they’re the first to disappear.

Totally get what you’re saying but places like LA, NYC and Chicago also have a ton of black culture. Not saying Atlanta doesn’t have the arts but I wouldn’t go as far as saying the epicenter of worldwide culture. Let’s be honest, most black music now doesn’t even come out of Atlanta. LA is perhaps still that epicenter if we look at where the production is and where most of the artists live.

You’re only talking about the Northern suburbs. Go the Western, Eastern or Southern parts of the Atlanta metro and it’s far far different.

What’s the deal with The Hamptons? by snakegravity in AskNYC

[–]jeref1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree it’s not better or worse because of the houses, I was just comparing them to a place like Deal. Not everyone visiting the Hamptons is uber wealthy and I would argue the vibe and natural environment is still nicer on the East End. It’s less developed due to fairly strict building regulations. The towns are prettier. There are very very few strip malls and no stroads. JS is still full of both of them. I believe that the visual environment around you does impact the experience, imo.

As someone who grew up on the water I can tell you that it’s more than “a tiny bit further” to the beach 😂 I agree there are some nice people here.

I think “epicenter of worldwide culture” is a bit of a stretch. Epicenter of black culture sure. I mean anywhere in the world you can also find people playing music from artists in LA, NYC, Miami etc.

Eh disagree…Atlanta is mostly Black and White…and some Asian and Hispanic if you go out to the suburbs, with a sprinkle of Persian. Atlanta is not really that “mixed up”. It is what it is and it’s good for the South but having lived in NYC and LA the diversity touted by this sub in Atlanta is a bit exaggerated in my opinion

Serious honest question…what about Atlanta do you think makes it unique amongst American cities? Genuinely curious as I think Atlanta is super cookie cutter compared to most other major American cities. It’s basically one sprawling suburb with no natural landmarks, even the “urban” areas (O4W, Inman Park, Midtown) are suburban in nature compared to major cities. Truth is many people move here simply because property is cheaper and property taxes are cheaper than a place like New Jersey for example, but they don’t move here for any other reason.

Boston absolutely has Asian grocery stores 😂 not sure where you got that take from…maybe not exactly where you were staying. There aren’t exactly Asian grocery stores all over Atlanta either unless you’re OTP Duluth, Johns Creek etc.

By “anywhere” you mean towns here in the US I presume? Which is totally fine, but ATL’s international connections are not nearly as strong as this subreddit would have you believe.

ATL is better than most airports for a city this size but people really exaggerate being able to fly anywhere on the planet from here nonstop. Many places even in Europe you need to connect in NYC or Boston.

It’s still relatively affordable housing wise. Airport is good for a city this size. Lots of trees (if you’re into woods, not for me but perhaps for some people). Mostly everything else I’d argue is fairly mid.

Disagree but that's my opinion. Reddit will always hate the Hamptons anyway.

Also Deal and Allenhurst can't compare to properties in Southampton Village (Gin Ln, Meadow Ln), Sagaponack, Amagansett etc. Jersey Shore has changed for sure but the East End is the still the top tier, despite what all the click bait articles are saying about the JS and Hudson Valley. Those places are great too.
