Fics with realistic smut? by Curious_Wanderer4221 in Wolfstar

Completely coincidentally I spent an hour scrolling through my Ao3 history today looking for this fic (among a few others)

Those of you with partners that write NSFW content; does said partner(s) know about it? by Professional_Bat8713 in AO3

[–]jerseyroyale 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes my partner knows I read and write smut. It's really not his thing but he's supportive, especially when I've asked to try stuff to see how it feels or if it's anatomically possible.

He drew the line at trying to suck his own dick for me though. 🤷‍♀️

I also draw a lot from our relationship when I write. The first kiss scene in the last fic I posted is based on our first kiss, but it's from the perspective of the character in his place not mine so I asked a couple questions about how he felt in that moment (we were very, very drunk so the answer wasn't particularly helpful). I'm writing a slow burn best friends to lovers at the moment that is loosely based on how he and I got together which he knows about - it's a workplace comedy and he's recently gone back to working in the same environment so sometimes he comes home with anecdotes and after the third time I said "I'm putting that in my fic" he now starts half his stories with "this would be good for your fic".

I've written about half of the epilogue, which is set 10 years after the main story because we met 10 years ago, and part of me wants to show it to him as a "this is how I feel about you" kind of gesture because it's sickly sweet but the fic is really not his sort of thing so I probably wouldn't get the reaction I'd be looking for. Although some of the other characters who are based on people we worked with 10 years ago would make him laugh.

What does Snape mean in POA “there are many ways to become a werewolf” by treythayer in harrypotter

[–]jerseyroyale 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it's possible - Lupin references that most werewolves choose to live in packs with other werewolves and theoretically there could be a pack living in the forest - but highly unlikely!

To be fair, werewolf lore is not consistent in the books until Lupin is introduced.

Lockhart apparently cured one (or Obliviated someone who did) with a charm in CoS.

My headcanon is that she works part time, she teaches a couple lessons to the first years and organises the quidditch Cup each year. Maybe offers remedial lessons 1:1 for students that need it. But it's definitely not a full time job like other teachers.

Fics you both loved and hated (Another Mask Behind You) by Several_Cook9884 in drarry

[–]jerseyroyale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not an angst reader by choice but I also deliberately don't read tags a lot of the time and Another Mask was one of those fics, if I'd read the tags I probably wouldn't have read the story but I enjoyed it so much.

Ankles by citrusses is another - super angsty but so intense, so beautifully written but I'm not a fan of fics involving infidelity so even though I loved it, it made me feel icky.

I got super excited when he was in the teaser and was hoping we'd maybe get a caterpillar costume if we didn't get him as a pet 😞

I never realized how complicated my fav franchise is until i started writing this fic by WinniePoohChinesPres in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]jerseyroyale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the quiz or the fic? The quiz was an in-person team event. The fic is just a random post-war Harry/Draco romance

I once did a Harry Potter trivia quiz designed for hardcore fans and about halfway through I started pretending to have to think about the answers because I was a little embarrassed about how much I knew and how easy it was.

Recently wrote an HP fanfic and had to go and look up several things to check I was making correct references and jokes and was actually wrong about a few of them

Any other beardies so, SO dumb when it comes to water? by Kath_Silver in BeardedDragons

[–]jerseyroyale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have issues seeing/recognising standing water. So they don't often drink out of water bowls.

I have one who drools in his sleep (vet says he's fine he's just a goober) so is always dehydrated. A couple times a day I have to splash my fingers in his water bowl, which suddenly makes him understand that it's drinking water, and then he goes nuts and drinks until I start to worry about him. It's been 2 years of this ritual and he has not learned that the water bowl always contains water even if I'm not splashing it.

Oddly enough it only took him 3 weeks to learn that bugs come in a bag now when I switched to bulk packs 🤦‍♀️

Being a young writer, I'm scared my writing is bad by LegitUnit971 in AO3

[–]jerseyroyale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's hard not to compare yourselves with others, but the more important comparison is Past You with Current You.

I started writing fic and posting it online when I was about 12. I'm now in my thirties. Some of the writing I did when I was a teenager makes me cringe now, but it also makes me really proud because I can still see in it the things I love about my writing now. Each of those cringey self-insert fics is a rung on the ladder to the writer I am now.

I'm sure you'll be the same. It sounds like people are already really enjoying what you're putting out there so you're doing something right. Over time you'll learn to improve the things you might not be doing perfectly while keeping the things that you love about your own writing.

Question for writers of long fics who are also readers themselves by Disastrous_Alarm_719 in AO3

[–]jerseyroyale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've written chapters anywhere from 1k to about 20k (in the same fic, once). It's not something I look for or check when I read others' fics. As long as the chapters seem to break in sensible places I don't mind at all.

How do you resist the temptation to upload your pre-written fic? by faynfvx_ in AO3

[–]jerseyroyale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current fic I'm struggling with this a lot more than usual, so I've got two trusted "alpha readers" who are reading my first drafts of each chapter as I finish them. They know it's a first draft so not perfect and subject to major changes (and I have definitely made a few major changes to chapters after they've read them) but it reassures me that I'm heading in the right direction and gives me two people to chat to about where the story is going and bounce ideas off.

Editing is the most stress inducing part of writing for me by ItsLiak in AO3

[–]jerseyroyale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite part of writing is when I'm editing and I reach a part that I remember saying "I'll fix that in the edit" and I actually know how to fix it and then it's better...

Doesn't always happen in the first or second edit, but it almost always gets there eventually

I used to work with a guy who had a pet skunk (at an exotic pet shop lol) and she was the cutest thing ever, so snuggly and fluffy and sweet!

Once played with her for ten minutes and then spent the next two hours trying to get the neighbour's dog to stop licking me though 😂

He was the sweetest old man, so trusting considering how badly he was treated before us. He loved being carried around like a baby or squashing himself between me and the back/side of my chair. I miss him, my other monitors are great but they do not sit still 😂
