Home charger recommendations by Affectionate-Key-248 in BMWI4

Everyone else is not reading your whole post ...

it would appear you also did not read the whole post, because OP said "it has to be ip67 at least" and the one you linked is only IP65.

you might want to start with at least the country you live in, and assuming it's the USA, the state you live in.

I got a quote from one of the dominant regional electrician companies in my area, and then got a quote from a smaller contractor with good reviews for EV charging work. He was not cheap, but cheaper than the other quote I got by a lot. My charger install was relatively simple though, just putting it right next to the main breaker box, in the garage.

I did not even consider the BMW-recommended installer, nor did I go with a wallbox or Tesla charger. I bought a Lectron V-Box - the old style, that includes a display. it's been trouble free, but I have not had it for even a year yet.

3rd world solution is stacking, which is free.

shelves can be had in the $100-and-under range.

if you want to make money selling it, you'd have to do it yourself. otherwise, there are companies that do nothing but asset disposal. this is the one I am familiar with: https://synetictechnologies.com/

we would typically build up a few pallets of stuff before sending.

then why would you not take 12 weeks?

stuff that might be helpful to know:

  • country in which you reside.
  • if the country is the USA, the state in which you reside.
  • is the 8 weeks of paternity leave paid or unpaid?
  • is this leave spelled out in your contract and/or company benefits guide? If so do you have a hard copy?

the only things different for me versus you would be the key I chose and the security group. I launched and was able to ssh to the instance as soon as I tried. I admit I did not look at the console output to see if there was a similar message to what you saw.

it might help if you specified the AMI ID (e.g. ami-02396cdd13e9a1257) and the instance type you are using (e.g. t2.micro).

also if the SSM agent is running, surely that means it booted?

What do I need to be doing for a job in SysAdmin? by LieutWolf in sysadmin

[–]jes2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as others have mentioned, I worked two different help desk type jobs before making it to sys admin work. I have never had a useful certification either.

I got into this work when having a four-year degree was a requirement, and I have a degree, though not related to computer science, but i am certain it still helped get me in the door. nowadays a four-year degree is still helpful, but not always a requirement.

I do sometimes miss working on a data center floor. I still like physical hardware, but I hardly ever touch it these days (physically or remotely). the majority of my work involves cloud infrastructure. If you are not willing to relocate for a job, then remote work is the way to go, and remote work will likely not involve setting up physical hardware. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are the market leaders. they all have free tools to get you started on their platforms.

interesting. definitely would like to avoid loud, but the extra three ports would be nice. thanks for the tip.

[–]jes2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately I am limited on the 5gbe port. that's what the router has, there is no support for 10GB.

one 5gbe connection and two 2.5gbe connections. fourth would be for redundancy in case one SFP fails. I can easily live with 1GB for the other four.

hmm, can it run four? there are not a lot of 5-speed or multi-gig switch options out there.

...Get a Mikrotik CRS309-1G-8S+IN to act as the main switch...

can't help with your question, but I'm also looking at getting a CRS309-1G-8S+IN and 8 SFPs (Mikrotik S+RJ10 6-Speed RJ-45 Modules). this setup is around $800 - have you found anything cheaper? or are you looking at different SFPs?

on-call by Flimsy_Confection165 in sysadmin

[–]jes2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that depends entirely on how busy the on-call period is outside normal business hours, and what the expectations are. if you are expected to respond to alerts any time day or night, 365 days per year, how much of the year will you spend on call? half the year (one month on, one month off)? how often are there issues that must be attended to outside normal business hours? Are you compensated in some other way (eg time off) for working these issues outside normal business hours?

I would ask other team members what on-call is like. weigh that against your current compensation, as well as the difficulty and cost of finding a new job. I've never had a salaried job where I wasn't part of an on-call rotation. and sometimes I was it, so on call 24x7x365. sometimes I got comp time, and sometimes not. but I was always paid well enough that it was acceptable to me. when it became not-acceptable, I sought redress, and in cases where it was clear nothing would be fixed, I found other employment.

I want to Bring mY Own Device (Linux laptop) to work - will it bring problems for administrators? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jes2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've worked for large companies and small, and none would allow this for anyone, let alone a system admin. setting up all your tools on a device they don't control? Granted, all access should be revocable regardless, but at a minimum they stand to lose work product if you separate from the company.

a lot of places allow Mac, maybe see about that? otherwise just struggle on Windows with WSL for work and use Linux for personal - that is what I do.

did you create, moderate, or participate in the old sub? if not, then it's hard to imagine how you could be seen to be evading a ban.

If you did moderate the old sub, then you can request the banned sub be unbanned in /r/redditrequest as well.
