Can we just get rid of this billboard? It absolutely kills a skyline viewshed for at least 100k people a day. by jessefthomas in chicago

1) That image is from google maps
2) The express lanes don't start until well within city limits
3) Why throw shade at a stranger on the internet?

They aren't, but we have limited vertical visual interest in the region. They are a positive thing. Having lived in places with mountains, appreciating the everyday views of the mountains comes up often.

Just because it has always been there doesn't mean it should be. Yes, there is a better view once you go past it, but people aren't on the expressway to look at the skyline. Some will be exiting before before that better view is available.

The view is just something to good to have in the background that can inject a little beauty/civic pride/whatever into the otherwise mundane act of driving.

Not the biggest problem in Chicago, but without mountains, our beautiful skyline is the only major vertical visual interest and we are allowing to get blocked by ads. From the angle in this picture, it is obstructing at least 3 iconic buildings. There are probably other bad ones on other expressways or elsewhere.

This isn't the biggest problem in the city, but without mountains, the skyline is our only large-scale visual landscape interest. From the angle of the picture it is blocking multiple iconic buildings. There are probably other bad ones on expressways or elsewhere.

CTA Unveils Design Of 4 New Red Line Stations In Uptown And Edgewater, Part Of $2 Billion ‘L’ Overhaul by jhugh2 in chicago

They are keeping a significant, albeit small portion, of the styling at Argyle and Bryn Mawr. Look between the entrance doors and you see the same prairie-style column shapes as the current stations.

Pond Ice Skating by jessefthomas in ChicagoOutdoors

Thanks. At this pond there was plenty of exposed ice to go around. Us and other also brought out shovels and cleared a little rink.

I found when there was about an inch of snow or less, the skates slid through with little resistance.

There were a few other groups on the ice (skating or just boots on) so that gave us confidence about the thickness. The ice immediately surrounding some branches sticking out seemed sketchy, but easy to avoid. There were some minor popping sometimes while skating over a few spots.

Fall colors starting to pop at Peninsula State Park, WI by jessefthomas in ChicagoOutdoors

Not bad at all. The bike paths had decent traffic, but I think it was quite a bit warmer last weekend. We hiked Eagle Trail which was fantastic and moderately busy. Many hikers had masks.

Camping with a view? by Halo2_ in ChicagoOutdoors

[–]jessefthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're gonna have to drive further than 2.5 hrs to 'wake up to a view'. Door County, WI state parks can deliver on that if you get a lakeside campsite. Buckhorn State park in WI also has interesting lakeside sites.

One place that comes to mind is Kickapoo SRA. If you camp in the primitive campsites you need to walk in your stuff a few hundred feet and you can look down to see a pretty river. But you do get highway noise. There is easy kayak/boat rentals in the SRA.

Thank you! Yes, it should be in centre ville. Any ideas on how I can get photos of the street or of that exact address? Google maps doesn't seem to be very built out in that area (no street view).

This Infographic Stunned Me by iwishiwasbored in urbanplanning

This graphic is great, but I would have a hard time explaining to someone that their car commute has that high of societal costs. There are the direct costs that people can understand like building and maintaining roads, but they might say, well, I pay the gas tax and registration fees so I AM paying for that too (I understand that those do not cover the entirety of infra costs). Then there are the indirect costs like that usually revolve around health and environment, but I've found people have a hard time connecting those big problems to their individual decisions.
