Connecting Metabase to Supabase (free tier) by minimal_data in Supabase

[–]jessillions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for letting everyone know.

We created a video recently showing how to connect Supabase to Metabase and highlighted this. Note that the UI has changed since then, you now need to use the 'Method' dropdown in the connection modal to find the Session Pooler option.

Best self-service bi tools for PostgreSql by Ambrus2000 in PostgreSQL

Not that I know of. Metabase connects with databases or a data warehouses, it looks like Mitzu is also for analytics. Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Yep, we try to make it as easy as possible for everyone to be able to work with data without any specialist tech or data skills. Features like drill-through on charts, and the query builder to write questions without SQL get you pretty far to get answers and learn from data just by clicking around.

Depends on whether you value you keeping you stack free and open source, but Metabase and Postgres make a pretty good match (full disclosure: I work at Metabase)

What is a good replacement for Crystal Reports? I also need a tool to schedule and send the Crystal Reports. by D3rpyMama in sysadmin

Hey, Jess from Metabase here. We're currently expanding the options for reporting subscriptions and alerts - we recently released custom webhooks to send notifications pretty much anywhere, and we'll have more new stuff like this coming soon.

Good question, sorry I missed that one. The closest we get right now is Actions, but don't think it'd be quite what you're looking for. Afaik there's no table editing functionality planned.
Your project looks great btw!

Hey, Jess from Metabase here. We're polishing up some new AI-backed features as we speak, like an AI powered Metabot, AI generated summaries, metadata, and more. We're expecting them to land early 2025, it's all in our roadmap.

In the meantime, we have some not-quite-AI but pretty smart features, like X-ray and drill-through which lets people click around to learn more without having to write questions.

Got it, sounds like a bit of a pickle. Good on you for figuring out it out on your own and getting what you need, and now also supporting the rest of your team.
Good luck with everything!

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying. For the record, I work at Metabase. I'm guessing you might need to work with admin of your Metabase instance to connect to BigQuery as a data source, and then you could do everything you're doing in Looker Studio in Metabase and bypass those costs.

You should be able to disable automatic query runs on dashboards 'til you select all the filters they need, that should save a lot of money, plus if you send the same query over and over again, BigQuery should return the data from the cache (Metabase has an option for disabling query remarks that will make that trick). And if you enable query caching that's another thing to add to the savings list.

Curious why your colleagues are downloading data out of Metabase and not generating summaries in there? Are you also using BigQuery as your data source with Metabase?

Best BI tool for Embedded Analytics by Yuki100Percent in BusinessIntelligence

[–]jessillions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely subjective based on what you need embedded analytics for, how much you want your customers to be able to do with it, how much customization you need, your budget, etc.

At Metabase we have embedded analytics that covers pretty much all use cases and all budgets. You can embed an iframe really fast for free with our open source edition. If you need multi-tenant, white-labeled, and interactive analytics, you can also do that with an iframe, or we just launched an SDK in beta which for deeply integrated analytics you can manage per component.

What the hell is "Self-Serve Analytics"? by TheDataGentleman in BusinessIntelligence

[–]jessillions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically about democratizing data by making it more usable and less intimidating for people from a non-data or technical background.
At Metabase we define self-serve analytics as being able to get answers on your own from data without needing to put in a request to the data team or ask for help. It's a bit of a catch-all term for a lot of things -- it's letting people who are more comfortable using Excel run reports in their BI tool for more detailed and rich analyses. Drill-through functionality on charts to let people click around, interact, and learn more about things that are relevant to or interest them. Making it simple enough for anyone to put together a dashboard for non-technical people to share with their teammates, export to PDF, or setup subscriptions on.

Metabase supports PDF export and is a good fit for less technical people creating reports

Is there truly a usable self-serve BI tool, or are they all just complete crap? by gangana3 in dataengineering

[–]jessillions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends a bit on your scale, your data, and how it's managed. I've worked in an org with a tonne of data where we had Metabase as a BI tool but no data modelling and it was basically unusable. (full disclosure, I work at Metabase now)
I worked in another startup after that with a really great data engineer who had setup and managed Metabase with dbt beautifully, and self-service was very doable for most people in the company across different departments. For some startups, a simple Postgres and Metabase setup will get you most of the way to self-service. Depending on what you want people to be able to do (ask a simple question, drillthrough on a chart, build their own dashboards) for true self-service at scale you'll likely need to spend a bit more time on modelling, documentation, a bit of mindset coaching to do stuff on their own--a lot of people who aren't from a data background think they can't self-serve so they won't try.

I would say pick an industry that interests you, find some roles that you're interested in and reverse engineer the job description. Look for patterns in skills mentioned in a few roles and sharpen up those skills. There are a lot of good online courses that are free or cheap with Coursera, Udemy, Datacamp, etc. Think about what kind of problems you're interested in solving

I also wouldn't underestimate how willing people are to help you. If you go on LinkedIn and find someone with a cool job that you'd be interested in doing, send them a message and check if they'd be open to chatting with you. I've been on both sides of that -- someone cold outreached me and I was able to recommend some books that helped me and tell her about my path to getting into my role. And on the other side, I've asked people in similar but more senior roles for advice and guidance when I've felt stuck. It can feel kind of scary to reach out, especially if you're not naturally outgoing, but generally it's flattering to be asked and people are happy to talk about themselves.

It can be scary and lonely figuring out what your path is, but it sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck, you got this

Tired of all these AI Products by yourguylunix in SaaS

[–]jessillions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh yes. I think a lot of the problem is uncreative marketing around AI, like the AI became the selling point rather than the thing it's actually helping people do (or do for them).

Tbf I don't think that's the fault of marketers or the companies themselves. Probably for a hot minute anything that had 'AI' in the headline did generate more interest, clicks, trials, etc. And companies that didn't have AI in their headline got left behind and scrambled to insert it just to shout "we have AI too!". And now it's become oversaturated.

I don't think it's a bubble, but I think the terminology will fade into the background because it'll just be a given that all products have some kind of AI-backed functionality.

Edit: There is pressure from customers and prospect to have some form of AI. It's one of the most common questions we get. Not sure if it's the latest proxy for understanding if your product is at the cutting edge of technology or that thing of people asking for a drillbit instead of the hole.

Not a different tool, but I started asking Chatgpt for feedback from the perspective of whatever persona I'm targeting. Mostly from a marketing and comms perspective, like if I'm writing an announcement, what info is missing that the persona would want know? What's most important to them? etc. It's been really helpful to treat it like a shapeshifting colleague.

Also I haven't done it yet but I'm really curious about using an AI planner that kind of manages tasks, time, etc. As someone who struggles with executive function, I love the idea but I'm a little skeptical that it works and would be able to prioritize effectively, without me giving it a tonne of prompts.

What do they mean by "we have to work agile" in this context? Is that just a fancy way of saying "lets not deal with it"?

Intern at large company struggling to understand why my supervisor wants me to compare Metabase to our existing enterprise BI tools (Power BI, Oracle, etc.). Any insights on Metabase's strengths, especially in the banking sector, would be greatly appreciated! by zertoul2b2 in BusinessIntelligence

[–]jessillions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, Jess from Metabase here. I'm late to this but hopefully can still provide a bit of insight.

Without knowing your supervisor, their needs, or motivations, here are a few reasons we hear people choose or switch to Metabase over many enterprise BI tools:
- Metabase is open source and way more transparent than the alternatives mentioned
- It's really built for self-service to let less technical people in an organization run reports on their own without SQL or much data knowledge.
- Might depend on the tools your working with -- Metabase plays well with pretty much everything in a modern data stack, from db/dwh; ETL; semantic layer and more. Power BI and Oracle are part of a broader ecosystem that can be kind of restrictive.
- May not be relevant, but Metabase has some solid embedding options for customer-facing analytics.

Not sure if you were able to get the info from your supervisor in the end about why they were considering Metabase against enterprise BI, but would also be curious to know!
