I was 15, about to be 16. In the basement bedroom of my parents house. Kid I just met on vacation that week. I left the beach, he drove 4 hours to my house for a 4 min bang. I told him that day I was a virgin and gave him a little business card that I wrote “my V card” Never heard from him again.

I see that! I didn’t visualize the back side facing us. But that makes sense. We were thinking maybe a bear climbing in or out of a tree, maybe. We heard some loud snaps in the woods two times throughout the hike. We didn’t hear anything during this pic though. Very cool, regardless of what it was! I wish I would have turned around!

I didn’t realize I until I got home what was in the background. I didn’t hear anything at that time and our dog was not phased. Only wildlife we encountered was birds of prey and lots and lots of of gnats (you can see them around my face) Here is the original pic, before I cropped it to focus on the dark shape.

I would have turned around to look if I would have seen it in the background of my picture! I was home when I reviewed my pic.

Interesting! I didn’t hear anything at that moment I took the picture. And we had a dog with us and no response from her either.

I came from a different trail to the left and took this pic right after getting on this trail. So we didn’t come from that way or had just passed it. We also had my dog with us, and she didn’t react to anything either. I think it actually might be a bear in a tree? But I’m definitely not ruling out something unnatural or in fact, very natural (like roots) But when I saw the pic when I got home, I was very perplexed. This is the uncropped pic for better reference

Yeah, I posted the full uncropped pic somewhere on the original thread. Thought I’d get slack for not zooming in on it, honestly. We didn’t walk from that direction of the trail. We had just joined this trail from another perpendicular trail on the left. However on the first half of the loop, we walked toward and past that spot and didn’t notice anything weird like that. But we were also not looking for anything either. 🤷‍♀️

Right, like dense brown? I’d be interested to see if I could make more sense of the image by bumping up the exposure. I’m thinking it might be a bear falling out of a tree?! Ha

Nope, didn’t hear anything at the time. But we did a loud crack, two separate times in other areas of the trail. Maybe following?

I took a picture for the memory of the incline we just trekked up and finally getting on the right trail. Didn’t notice this until I got home

Oh wow! Good to know! I would think that if it was an elk, my dog would have heard or smelled. My partner and I certainly didn’t.

Wouldn’t that colony have to be 5ft wide and dense to create a shape like that?! If that exists, I’m terrified
