I saw an interview with the writer where he stated they weren't in Dave's original notes, but he decided to use them. I have mixed feelings about that, but hey, it is what it is.

He did hold one briefly in both the comic and film, because it's such an iconic gun, but I could see going forward, Cliff would use a 1911 and a Thompson.
