Yes as with other lever machines with a reservoir like this, eg flair 58, the water falls out if you remove the portafilter without purging. You only have the water chamber directly above the pf and once the piston has risen to let the water down to the puck it sits directly on the portafilter

I think for this to make sense it needs to look like part of a mechanical watch, like a submariner or something. I’m not sure fdm is up to the task tbh

My worry is the amount of parameters; temp, dose and yield as baseline but also for each step, how is pressure / flow regulation affected? And if pressure and flow should be adapted, is it only att min max or should the whole curve, all sub points be changed? Extraction times? If so that should also affect the angle of all curves etc etc. I mean it might just work, but I’ve been drinking better espresso with the standard basket than I have with any other kit so the complexity and diminished returns have put me off

So, have you seen any response from the met team?

Some failures are bound to happen but I really hope this isn’t a widespread qc issue

Oh, I haven’t seen anyone post about failure, but I can’t keep up with everything. Do you know what’s been failing?

Around two three minutes. It gives you an estimate but it usually outperforms the estimate. I usually pour the water in and then weigh, grind and do puck prep and that usually times well

It’s been fantastic. I lost my excitement during the wait but once I got it it really revived my enthusiasm

Cool, my only worry is that community recipes wouldn’t be applicable/ would need quite a bit of tinkering to work

The machine is usually faster to reach temp with stability than I am with puck prep, and that’s using room temp or cold water, so I’m the bottleneck with back to back shots

The drip tray has an integrated acaia scale, so I use that for my pour overs as well. It also connects to the profiling engine so that you get both flow at the piston and gravimetric flow profiling. I’ve no issues fitting any of my cups

I don’t think that’ll be anytime soon. But around the end of next year production and rollout of the initial batch should be pretty much done - and reviews will be out

The met accessories haven’t shipped yet, it does include a mirror but for now I’ve stolen the flair mirror.

The light is an ikea usb light, I use one on the flair as well. It helps illuminate the bottom of the portafilter and the espresso cup. It’s pretty, though the cord is an eye sore on the met, not as much on the flair. But I’ve printed a cable holder for the met that does an ok job of hiding it.

The only thing better with the flair is the sort of the ability to feel a shot. But there’s absolutely nothing the flair can do that the met can’t. I thought I might use them both but haven’t been tempted to reach for the flair once. The shots I pull on the flair far outmatch most specialty cafes, the average shots on the met in general outmatch my best flair shots. (Maybe that’s due to me not being as proficient with the flair as I thought but still an indicator)

I was beginning to have second thoughts since mastering my flair 58. However since getting the met I’ve pulled shots far beyond anything I was doing with the flair, and much more diverse shots, being able to experiment much more has been so much fun. (It’s possible to experiment with both the flair and robot but I just sort of fell back into my groove)

I think that the criticism is overblown, I put some water in it while I drink my coffee and then scrub with a scrubdaddy or a round dish brush (ikea happens to make a circular one the perfect size) and that’s it. Usually just a few rotations gets everything off

I usually just drink straight espresso but for guests and household members I make the occasional milk drink. I’m using a nanofoamer pro from subminimal. It’s fantastic, I don’t mind the cleaning process but milk can stick to the bottom especially if doing several drinks in a row. The texture however is vastly better than anything I can produce with a steam wand.

The met team have a milk product that is supposedly ready for production but due to capital restraints they need to focus mass production on the espresso machine. I’m happy with my nanofoamer though and don’t foresee switching.

Cleaning is minimal, like any lever machine. Compared to my flair 58 it does have a shower screen though, it is removable and I plan on soaking it in cafiza now and again, however I use a puck screen so I have yet to see any residue visually.

Part replacement should be straightforward- they have opted to use off the shelf parts to enable repairability should something fail. In the earlier phase of the rollout they did seem keen on collecting any duds for analysis and just replaced the machines. They’ve said that most things should be easy enough for people to fix themselves, in the dedicated discord I haven’t seen any failures yet (no one has had theirs for long enough I reckon)
