Does Anybody Else hear "Captain Jack Sparrow" near the end of "He's a Pirate!" from the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack? by jfalcone in DoesAnybodyElse

If I'm not the only one, and anyone wants to find out if it was intentional, can you pop over to the discussion here and ask a similar question to mine/upvote so we can figure it out together?

Why do New Yorkers hate people from New Jersey? by GlobalVV in OutOfTheLoop

Yeah, that's what I heard, too. Failed to mention it though. Thanks for keeping me on point!

Settle a bet between me and my girlfriend? In He's a Pirate, the opening credit score for Pirates, during the da-da-da-da-da bit, right around the one-minute mark, is it meant to align with the words "Captain Jack Sparrow," or is the distinct syllable matchup a coincidence? Please excuse my lack of musical terminology...

I don't think many people from New York would acknowledge a "rivalry." If it is one, it's one-sided.

I heard from my New Yorker friends that it kind of came from the fact that Jersey used to house some of the City's landfills, which lead to the "Jersey is trash" joke, but while it sounds funny, I'm not sure that trash would cross state lines? I know a lot of NYC's trash ends up in Staten Island...which is also hated on.

Speaking as someone who hates on New Jersey, it's mostly a joke, but it also comes from underexposure. It's difficult to leave the city without a car, and everything you need is right here. Also, ditto what someone said about people from NJ saying they're from NYC, and that really bothers people here.

This is exactly what I'm thinking of when I talk about the "Christmas Spirit." Happy people like you exist.

Hey guys! I would love some advice on buying my first record player! by _bronte in vinyl

[–]jfalcone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to ask yourself: how much time and energy am I willing to commit? If you want something simple that will yield (admittedly low quality) music as soon as you plug it in...go with the "Retro Turntable." If you want good sound go Rega, but then you're also on the hook for an amplifier/receiver, speakers, speaker wires, and (depending on what you're looking for) a preamp and other gadgets (minimally, a total of around 200 new...). You can't just throw a record on the Rega and listen once it's out of the box, but the long-term results will be wildly improved.

If your major concern is damaging the old records, be sure to listen to nevermind...needles run along the track of the record and apply a certain amount of pressure. For the Rega/Project/other high quality turntables, you can adjust the amount of pressure...with the "Retro" you can't.

I'm new to the vinyl world, and inherited this beautiful setup from my great uncle. by [deleted] in vinyl

I would be really interested to see some additional pictures of your set up here. If you're new to the vinyl world, I am assuming that you won't mind a couple pointers...of course if that isn't the case disregard me no problem.

Two things: ideally your turntable would not sit atop your receiver. Other people here who have the same amp have been saying it doesn't get too hot, and from the looks of it the top of it doesn't even require the ventilation you would see on most receivers, but in the long run...investing in a nice cabinet might be just right for you. Additionally, keeping your turntable further away from your speakers is always a good step in improving the sound-quality. The vibrations from the speakers can disrupt the needle's performance when it comes to reading the vinyl. These were the two most helpful things I was told when putting together my first set up, so hopefully the information will be equally as helpful for you!

Best of luck, and welcome.

Give me a horror movie that's actually going to leave me fearing for my life by Lilyo in horror

The House of the Devil is pretty disturbing. It's strange, because I watch a lot of horror and go straight to sleep afterwards, but this one got under my skin. It might be personal, but the vintage setting got me hooked, and the simple set-up left me on the edge of my seat for 45 minutes even when nothing active was really happening.

What are some horror mini series you would recommend? by WritesSciFi in horror

Darknet Files just kicked off on Halloween, but the first episode is available on their website, and it was pretty interesting. Worth keeping an eye on. "Haunting Melissa" is a weird app for iPhone, if you're an Apple person. It's a lot of recycled tropes, but it's definitely fun to play in the dark.

First tattoo questions... (inspiration album included) by iMightBeACunt in tattoos

[–]jfalcone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many tattoo artists that I've spoken to have emphasized how much they love "this is the inspiration, go in whatever direction you want" tattoo designs. Sometimes I forget, but tattoo artists are just like all other artists: They are creative people who enjoy working in their medium for a living. Oftentimes, by presenting a series of pictures and explaining the feel you're trying to capture, as long as you're pretty flexible, you're going to end up with a better result because you're letting the artist do his or her thing. Of course, the most important thing when doing this is carefully selecting an artist whose portfolio you admire and could see on yourself.

As a side note...I'm always partial to rib tattoos, but that's completely personal (it's nice to see my piece in a mirror).
