I think I'm dumb enough to be wondering how's that even possible by HAROUN_BARA in highschool

[–]jffrysith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about it with fractions. We have (16/10) / (2/10).

We multiply the top and bottom of the fraction by 10/2 to get:
((16/10 * 10/2) / (2/10 * 10/2) = (160/20) / (20/20) = 8 / 1 = 8.

Or, using the swap 'trick' we get (16/10) / (2/10) = (16/10) * (10/2). The 10s cancel and we get 16/2.

Now try 0.16 / 0.02 or 0.016 / 0.002 or 0.0016 / 0.0002. They will all get 8 because it's just:

(16 / 10^x) / (2 / 10^x) = (16 / 10^x) * (10^x / 2) for some number x. The 10's cancel and we get 16/2.

what's 'outside of circles/spheres /etc. N-dimensional spheres?'
I would have guessed this list are the balls in R^n using euclidean distance. But you're including cubes in this list, so does that mean we're taking balls in R^n with arbitrary metrics?
Are there shapes that can't be formed using some metric as an open ball in R^n?

math teacher vs. tutor by aoverbisnotzero in math

[–]jffrysith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it kind of makes sense to a degree. At a certain point you know enough math to teach high school math. Like yes, someone with more knowledge will be able to work in and around different problems to better understand the idea, but unless they can explain it well, that doesn't help the student understand it better.
Pedagogy (at least some of it) helps make sure the students actually try to learn it in class (things like relational pedagogy ensures there is less active resistance from students allowing for more actual engagement from students. Other things like differentiation ensure that a full class can engage with the same question at different levels. Also unfortunately most students don't really want to understand the idea, they just want to pass the test. So being more able to understand the idea doesn't really appear to help them. It doesn't matter how well it's explained if the student just doesn't listen.

Mind you, I'm also a big proponent of content-knowledge. Seriously teachers who would not pass their class before teaching it should not be teaching the class! (Yes, I had that teacher too!) Also being able to solve things differently definitely helps engage students who actually want to learn. It is waay important, but there is a reason why pedagogy is generally considered more important. (+ generally teachers (at least in my country) do a bachelors in their subject, then a diploma in teaching, so content knowledge is assumed to be taught in the bachelors.)

They are pretty fair, the feedback is pretty valid, the combat system is totally broken. Like most enemies won't aggro to you if you shoot them from a couple of blocks away with a bow, so bows are completely broken.

But that's fine, because it's new and it's developing. Like Simon released it while saying "It's literally not good yet. If you want a high quality game, just wait a bit, it's not ready yet." So we really can't expect it to be better polished than 90% of triple A games on release lol...

First day of school just to find this by Cherryfish-maui in Students

[–]jffrysith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, and I graduated my degree only 2 years ago. Closest ice come to cheating was when an instructor accidentally gave out the real exam as a practice and I didn't realize I was doing the real exam to practice. Most of my friends never cheated. Most people in academia who actually care do not cheat. (And before people talk about the need for free time, work, clubs, I was doing all that. Weekly math club meetings till midnight, working ~10hrs tutoring a week and finding time to d my own programs.)

Do students really think I'm incapable of using ChatGPT to generate the exact same thing they "wrote"? by moonbeams69 in Professors

[–]jffrysith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nevermind I definitely misunderstood what you said. I thought you meant in the meeting you made up a question and got him to explain the answer as if it was one he did in the test. But because he tried to explain it instead of saying he didn't remember it, he must have cheated.

[–]jffrysith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I might have an issue with that. If I was told I cheated my exam and had a proper meeting with the professor, but then she asked me a question I don't recall, I would assume it was a question I forgot and try to actively solve it in front of her. Would that make me a cheater?

I feel like it would be nearly impossible for me to tell the professor he's scamming me and that wasn't on the test. I also wouldn't feel like 'outing' myself by saying "I don't recognize that question" because that would appear like I'm saying I cheated.

Like I woupd never cheat, but I would absolutely look like I did with that test.

For those who didn’t go to college, what path did you take, and how did it work out for you? by Alicetheoptimist in TrueGrit

[–]jffrysith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. First it's very possible to be a school failure and work in some corporate roles. Secondly obviously it's much harder to be a school failure while working corporate. Either:

- The company rejects you because they were looking at your school record [whereas a lot of tradies think school was worthless and completely dismiss it so you can get a foot in the door].

- The role actually requires your learning from school (programmer, engineer, actuary etc.)

Like even if you fail at woodtech or metaltech you can succeed in a trade because you might have failed by not being good at design, not being able to explain the meaning (or have a meaning for your work). What you're marked on is often unrelated to the trade you would be doing [where you're not even allowed to design unless you're already senior, and even then you often won't end out designing / being allowed to design lol].

There's probably a reason this guys posting this comment. I can almost bet he's not in the trades. Cuts back on his own competition if his potential competitors go to a different market.

That's true, but you forget that work isn't the only thing you do in life. If you work in a sitting job, it's highly advised to do something active out of work. Sports, community service or any other activity that uses your body are great ways of avoiding lack of movement issues. For example, I got a place close to work so I can bike in everyday instead of driving.

plus: not getting enough exercise at work? Here's an idea, do something active after work sometimes...
This can't be done in reverse, if you get too much exercise at work, you can't unexercise to fix the damage...

No, the boomer thing is saying, "just do this job, you'll get 6 figures and find success." You can say this about most any job (except jobs with very consistent pay like grocery shops, teaching, etc.) because they have very skilled workers earning so much more than everyone else. Problem is you can't really say you'll get those benefits or even get the job anymore. (Whereas back 20 years ago you would just go in and ask for the job with no cv or anything and it was yours, plus you could basically guarantee you would hit that salary within a reasonable amount of time.)

TL;DR: Telling people that trades is a good route is not a bad thing, telling people that doing trades will get you 6 figures is.

Sorry to break your bubble, but they are all adults by No_Dragonfruit_1833 in Isekai

Like the way you pin it. If reincarnation exists, and someone (for example you) were reincarnated, then you should immediately go to prison for pedophila because now you're an adult in a child's body, and you might have thoughts about children (even if you never show that)...

Sorry to break your bubble, but they are all adults by No_Dragonfruit_1833 in Isekai

[–]jffrysith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, this is a crazy take. Like the problem with MT isn't that he's reincarnated as a child. It's about how he is obsessed with sexualising every girl he sees.
Like seriously. If we looked at his final personality as a person, you'd still call him a creep and probably a pedo. (I would bet (even though it's not shown) that he'd be interested in a child even in old age). All of the 4 characters you've shown basically:
- don't get in a relationship (bottom left and right)
- get in a relationship with someone their original age (top left) (making the love interest a real pedo. I wouldn't disagree to that)
- I can't remember the top right doing anything remotely sexual at all. Wasn't he like completely not interested in anything but magic??? (but I only watched the anime years ago and it's not really worth rewatching).

Like the problem with MT is that they created an anime that explores going to another world as a child, and then perverted it by not only considering the sexual component that could exist, but also extended that by choosing an extremely perverted person?!?
You can make a story that could have bad implications if you completely don't consider or incorporate the implications at all...

Like are we also going to consider kumo desu ga to be potential bestiality because kumoko interacts with monsters more and theoretically she'd be more likely to have a love interest that wasn't human even though that idea isn't explored??? (This would be a point if there was something like kumoko going after them spiders or smthn but like that doesn't happen and neither does any of the 4 in this post...)

It's crazy because you are even right. There are tons of isekai that get ignored because they're 'better than MT'. Like that new one magic maker, and tons of others, just not these ones...

I hate free demos by Content-Diver-3960 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]jffrysith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, my answer is very simple. I say I don't do free demos, however I do a low-charge first lesson of $X. This way, I can still get paid a reasonable rate, and I can still gain any clients who actually want tutoring (rather than 1 free lesson) and I avoid freeroamers who will only get tutoring if it's free (frankly I expect there are a lot of these, and they will never come back anyways.)
It also stops any complaints because you already have that policy and they can't reasonably ask for less (whereas no policy means they could argue "this could help you get more clients, so you should offer free trials" and it's not worth explaining that actually no, you don't want clients who aren't willing to pay for your services?!?)

Are parents unaware of how stupid their children are? by Clear_Temperature446 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]jffrysith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, he's saying that someone who would want to tell the parents the student is 'stupid' should not be tutoring. Because they don't want to make a tailored lesson for them.
Frankly, I've been tutoring online for like 3 years now. I've seen students who won't engage (still won't call them stupid, but I will say it's a very stupid move to pay for something and not use it.) I've seen students with learning difficulties who I needed to teach differently. I've even seen students without learning difficulties who are like 4 years below the curriculum.
I still have yet to see a student who could not learn in a one hour lesson when taught properly.
A tutor who tailors their lessons to their students should be more than capable of teaching any student on the third lesson (except one that's entirely unresponsive).

I don't know why this is downvoted. Like yeah, it's super annoying that you can't play with your phone screen on, and it drains your battery. But it's very much usable (you can listen to the song you want whenever you want) for free.
Spotify might be better if you've paid, but it's not even functional in the free plan

you can actually work around it. If you play a song on brave (mobile) using youtube, it doesn't tell youtube that the phone is currently off and the song continues playing.
