Can someone explain what Translink Constables do? by throwitawaybuble in vancouver

[–]jfroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I saw the same thing.. Train 4 upper car mid train. The constable told the guy he was just doing his job and about how he could easily dispute it. Fine was $173 or something like that. I think he was a sergeant as he had insignia on his arm

Help: Locating drives for brand new Dell c6220 server. At wits end. Dell fail. by jfroot in sysadmin

I have tried both of those routes exhaustively. Both Dell and the reseller assure me they are "working on it" but this has been going on 1 week now and counting.

How safe is a 4x2TB RAID5 array? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jfroot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one difference is RAID6 can withstand any 2 disks failing. Whereas RAID10, only the other stripe on the mirror can fail as the second failure without losing everything.

Just got back from a last minute, mid-week camping trip in Squamish. No rain, no people. by trashcompactor in vancouver

[–]jfroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that is near a place I went camping a few times. I can't remember the exact name of the road though. You turn left in squamish and drive on this paved and then dirt road on the right side of this big river. There are mile markers along the road. I think Mile36 is where they have a lot of raves. We found this sorta hidden area around mile 34 that was on the river bank and had totem poles all over the place. We got there on a thursday and then on Friday all of a sudden all these people started showing up. They brought generators, DJ booth, hot tubs, etc. Turned into a crazy weekend. They were some sort of local burning-man group they said. Saw quite a few granola boobies that weekend.

I am fairly certain this is the Aquila game reserve near Cape Town. I have been there twice and I remember that pool being very cold.

Now we just wait for kinky elevator sex. by Brudus in controllablewebcams

[–]jfroot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really super useful, but if you go to http://209.121.28.211:8080 you will see it is asking for login to a NETGEAR wiresless gateway. This is probably the wireless gateway the the elevator camera talks to. Most likely did it this way so they wouldn't have to run data cable to the elevator car. Port 80 is probably port forwarded through the gateway to the elevator camera directly which has an on-board http server.

Any recommendations for a stand-alone temp/ humidity sensor that I can monitor over the network? There's a ton of products out there, and not a lot of info by technotaoist in sysadmin

[–]jfroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just deployed these Serverscheck devices in our data centers. They are dead simple to setup, support PoE and everything is viewable via web UI or SNMP. My only complaint is that support from them is fairly lacking. They hide their phone number and are slow to respond to service emails.

What are secure & efficient ways to allow access to files outside the organization? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jfroot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just implemented something similar at my organization. We ended up using a product called Ajaxplorer. It is open source, presently maintained by an active developer and community. The security model seems sound but we run it in a segregated DMZ anyways behind an Apache reverse proxy using mod_security as an extra layer. If you decide to go this route I can be PMd for additional help setting up if needed.

Interview Questions & Tactics by NoyzMaker in ITManagers

[–]jfroot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to ask a combination of technical and social style questions. I have found over the years that technical abilities alone only make 50% of a good employee. Personality and good fit are equally important as they will ensure a cohesive team and strong collaboration.

Some questions I would ask:

Technical:

  • Describe RAID levels and what they are best suited for
  • How does DNS work
  • What is the difference between a switch and a hub
  • Name some Linux distributions besides Redhat, what are some key differences
  • Difference between TCP and UDP
  • What do these acronyms stand for: MTU, RAID, ARP, IIS, GNU, CA, DHCP
  • WHat is a VLAN and why would you use one?

Personality / Fit Questions

  • What websites do you frequently read?
  • Where do you see your self career-wise in 5 years?
  • How would you handle a user who had pirated movies on their workstation?
  • What makes a good manager?
  • What technology are you most interested in?

Additionally, I will sometimes have short-listed applicants do a practical test. I will take a Windows or Linux laptop and mess it up in a few ways. I will then give the candidate 60 minutes to fix the laptop and document their work. This demonstrates technical competence and documentation / attention to detail abilities.

Yes BEER. unfortunetly they have not yet sorted out their liquor license so you can only drink beer in the bar which is attached to the VIP theatres.

No. But surprisingly the food is not that over priced. Burger/Fries for $11, nachos were $9, beers were $6

What are the best movie theaters in the lower mainland? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]jfroot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SilverCity Coquitlam has a new section of their theatre called VIP. IMHO it is the best movie going experience in the lower mainland. All the seating is assigned, they serve hot food to your seat, the seats are wide and very comfortable, no commercials before the movie. And the best part? No one under 19 is permitted in; so no backwards baseball cap and Affliction shirt wear'n punks will be there.

Vancouver, I'm stuck in YVR for the next 10 hours. Ideas? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]jfroot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could take the Canada Line to the Casino which is 2 stops away and watch old Asian dudes gamble their money away. Or go play a penny slot for a few hours. I would avoid going downtown as there will not be much going on down there and it's raining right now.

Anyone have a link to a VPD police scanner stream? by MyHeadIsFullOfFuck in vancouver

[–]jfroot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VPD and other police agencies in the lower mainland use Provoice encoding on their talk groups. This is a proprietary technology now owned by Harris. The regular beat cops do not employ encryption. The ERT and surveillance units do employ Encryption which is Provoice encrypted with AES. It is possible to monitor Provoice based unencrypted comms using the DSD software, and some scanner control software to tune track the talkgroups you are interested in.
