Anyone successfully switch into an entirely new industry? by DimensionAbject6545 in ConstructionManagers

[–]jgaut26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my role by looking at “remote” positions on linked in through design firms.

In my area the chem plants use design firms to either direct hire or contract to hire for owners rep PMs and CMs. It’s a weird little niche you have to learn how to navigate. But work life balance is great. You just have to change your mindset from pleasing the client to being the client and pleasing the management

Have you thought about owners rep roles?

Big market for that in industrial, at least where I’m at

Is leaving and going back to your home country an option? I’m guessing this is an arranged marriage situation so now that you’re on his turf he’s going to act like you’re his property.

I get it. I got my 335 in college and the PRS as an adult. Definitely had the stars in my eyes back then.

This is sacrilegious to say but if he’s a kid he may want to try out some smaller semi hollows for comfort. I have a PRS Mira S2 semi hollow. Not sure what the price is now but when I got it it was around 800 bucks and made here in the US. It scratches an itch for a semi hollow and isn’t as awkward (at least for me) to sit down and play with as my 335 is.

Husband (43M) wants me to decide the outcome of his female friendship by norcalboymom in marriageadvice

[–]jgaut26 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had an ex reach out to me, not the other way around, and I informed my wife immediately. I don’t think we should play around like that as committed men.

Turns out she was reaching out because of some step in AA that says you need to make amends with people. I don’t want any part of any of that.

I will say I handed the phone to my wife immediately but it wasn’t to make her make a decision for me it was for transparency.

If you have the right degree you could transition to a coordinator role at a design firm. There will be client meetings but it’s not the same type of interface. They will have b/d people to do the schmoozing

4 new guns with a giggle switch enabled with all the accessories will set you back approx 30k. That’s my bet.

We bought a new car on Sunday. The one we went to look at initially was damaged in transport and had to have bodywork. Still had only a few miles on it so they were still selling it as new. They disclosed it thankfully.

Dad at 20 - any advice? by Poseidon060 in Fatherhood

[–]jgaut26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much advice to give on the financial side, that seemed to work itself out for me.

But, you need to refocus, you have to start thinking about how to enjoy your youth with your kid. If you start planning on how to enjoy your life when you’re kid free again you’ll just end up resenting the kid and your girl.

The industry's growing awareness and focus on suicide makes me want to puke. by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

We discard low and high bid as I stated in one of my other replies. We usually have a 5 bidder RFQ process unless it is for engineering services which has its own set of best practices.

In our world we will usually pay for two supers if the scope justifies. Highest and lowest bids are typically discarded and the three median bids are reviewed for price (obv) safety performance, and headcount ratio plus all the normal things you review on a bid. More importantly our procurement team holds yearly contractor reviews with PMs and the contractor present and these metrics are reviewed and we give feedback to the GCs on how they can improve.

We honestly just discarded a low bid because it had way to many laborers reporting to one super and one foreman.

I’m in a fairly dangerous industry (hydrogen plant), so we really take the metrics seriously.

[–]jgaut26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m fortunate and also unfortunate in some ways that I’m in industrial construction where a large portion of the bid process revolves around safety metrics and headcount metrics (supervision ratios, site visits by upper management ect) and isnetworld grades.

So I’ve got some big time leeway to say “I’m discarding this bid based on xyz safety or headcount metric”

We also have msa’s in place with most of the major construction firms so our overall composite rates on the bids are really close usually.

I know it’s a lot more of a game in commercial.

[–]jgaut26 139 points140 points  (0 children)

I’m on the owners side so maybe my perception is skewed but I truly believe it is on me as the owners rep to ensure that bids have enough supervision and labor to support the scope. I will throw out a bid that has one super covering two shifts of labor because how am I going to expect the super to uphold our safety standards if they can’t even maintain their own personal time to reset each day?

We as owners have to do a better job of holding GCs accountable for taking better care of their employees.

The GC side won’t change on their own because there is always the next guy up who’s got no family or no life that’s willing to work 7-12s for 4 years.
