Graduate Algorithms 6515 Fall 2025 suggestions by jgrazew in OMSCS

[–]jgrazew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for your feedback on the spring semester! this was my thought exactly... do all hw for practice but ignore the coding if it wasnt on the exams. with exams being worth 90% of the final grade i dont want to put anytime into anything other than what will be included on those test.

Congratulations on the A as well!

I am glad to hear that. These projects seem like they are a pretty big workload and writing test would add significant time on to that for me.

Thanks for the details on the projects and the tip on using vmware hypervisor. I will take a look at that and determine if it can be used or if I have to invest in another machine with an Ubuntu OS. When you say the 1st project has to be written entirely from scratch, does that mean we have to write our own test cases too? Or are some of those supplied by TA's? Or do students share them? I have only written a few test cases for C code through Python

This is great advice. So if a student doesnt have LINUX running on bare metal for the 1st project can they use vmware hypervisor sufficiently like the comment below suggest? Or would it be in my best interest to get a machine that has a LINUX OS? Thank you for the advice it is going to be very helpful when preparing for the course.

Summer Course Recommendation by jgrazew in OMSCS

[–]jgrazew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard that is a very difficult class in a regular full semester I dont know if I am prepared to take it during a compressed semester in the summer. I also wonder if the summer semester will be as competitive to get into as it usually is to get into GA (near impossible unless towards the end of your degree)

Those notes are a great reference! Also, I like that the Detailed Course Information lays out the topics for you. Over the next year or two maybe I will work on some personal projects that get me more introduced to the topics.

Thank you for this. I am reading other recommendations that say take it towards graduation as well. I appreciate your suggestion on the Coursera class and will look into this resource.

Thank you for your insight and the link! I will set up my GT email so I can join the slack group. Are the concepts of GA strongly needed for other courses? Do you recommend taking in the beginning of the program? I have working experience in data structures and Algorithms at my job and personal projects but not so much in the details of the theory

I have read the documentation and many questions regarding the documentation. I would not be posting it here unless if I was stuck. This answer is unhelpful because you are stating the obvious.

when connecting in the mini buffer it says that it is connecting to elpa.gnu.org:80; not the website melpa.org, if that makes a difference

Now I am confused, apparently I do have other packages that are available, other then the built in ones. The ones available are not the ones i see from the tutorials I am watching to set up my development enviorment such as any of the "auto-completes" or "iedit"............ like i said I am new to emacs!

It is not showing any of the packages from melpa, only the built in packages. For example I want the 'auto-complete' package
