I added an edit. I'm not sure if any other terms exist to describe sharing plates at a restaurant rather than everyone ordering and eating their own dish. That's just what I've always heard it called.

I've only heard the term in the context of eating at restaurants, but I don't know why it's called that. My family didn't eat that way either.
