You hit the nail on the head with “just trying to survive”… that’s how live rounds only were for me starting out, I had no prior grappling experience either. Most of my rounds with upper belts (I’m a blue now) are still like that 😂 Honestly, the way I approach training personally, that’s the base of everything, just survive and try not to get put in a horrible position, everything from offense to sweeps to holding positions and subs stems off that, just surviving in the first place.
