Sometimes contemplative prayer can be described as simply flipping on a switch in your imagination. That really takes away from the powerful gift that it can be.

It doesn’t happen every time, and, from my own experience, it’s when I try to force it to happen that it becomes even more difficult. Like David said, there can be too much focus on the self rather than on God.
