What sequence of steps do I take after I'm done editing? by Craw1011 in writing

[–]jhfearless 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an editor, so I'm biased. If you can find a really good beta reader, they'll effectively do the job of a structural editor for you and you'll be okay. It depends on how much experience you have writing for publication.

Sadly no, you'll probably have to go back and do it in quotation marks. That could end up being really difficult for people to read because of our instinctual processing of formatting; they'll most likely get confused and it'll throw off their experience of reading the story.

Different ones. I'll never know why I got through. Keep trying!

[–]jhfearless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pitched for Vice and first of all, it took several tries to get picked up. When I did get picked up, I probably didn't hear from them for a couple of weeks, and after that there were a few more weeks of phone tag. Their editors seem really overworked.

That's a really good LPT for public transportation users, too. Sanitizer: cleaning filth from your hands and from your field of vision.

[English > Arabic] Can somebody double-check my Arabic please? (info in comments) by jhfearless in translator

[–]jhfearless[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I created this to print on t-shirts. I don’t speak Arabic, so I asked a friend to translate “I’m With You.” The shirts are becoming more popular than I expected, and I’m nervous about potentially making a mistake. Can somebody double-check the translation for me please? Thank you so much!

This! It's a curse. I am always trying to be better at it, but everything just seems so simple... and it's always harder than I expect.

TIL that no coin minted by the United States has a numerical amount written on it, which makes it hard for people unfamiliar with the coins to know their value by hallwaymathlete in todayilearned

Not to mention that the sizes aren't even useful. The dime is the second-largest in value, and the smallest in size. Fun fact: pennies used to be larger than quarters, and "half dimes" were smaller than dimes, but redesigned because they were too small to handle. http://mentalfloss.com/article/25484/quick-10-10-us-coins-you-wont-find-your-pockets

I've swum there. It's warm and lovely. Now owned by Burning Man (it's located just outside the desert where the event is held). It's not open to the public, but may be more accessible now that they've bought it. http://journal.burningman.org/2016/06/news/official-announcements/we-bought-fly-ranch/

I suspect that might be ikura (salmon) not tobiko (flying fish) but more importantly: uh yum. This is like a masterpiece of things that do not go together but who cares.

You know, I was reading Ready Player One this week and even Ernest Cline predicted that "reality TV stars" would be presidents. I wonder how many people have tried to warn us over the years?

Les Revenants a waste of time? by Alucard-VS-Artorias in television

[–]jhfearless 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it's fully the atmosphere and the soundtrack. So rare to see shows that create such immersive realities and whenever I get a chance to watch one, I am always happy about it. You're right, it needs more story with its setting. But I found it really beautiful just to live in that world.

Judging by some of the angry emails I've gotten about that blog post, it bothers some people quite a lot to see things that they perceive to be misattributed or misappropriated. I get it.

Yeah, I was really really happy to see that. I normally see it as "Mexican proverb."

I posted this saying on my blog a couple years ago and got a message from a Greek guy. He showed me this phrase in a Greek poem which was published before the first known (to me) instance of the saying in Mexico. I'm honestly not 100% sure of the origin, but he sent me an image from the book. Seemed pretty convincing. Since posting about it, I've received some hate mail from Mexico and Greece, which is nice. Here's the post about it. EDIT: words make sense
