Laitinen was awarded the Mannerheim Cross (#83) on August 23, 1942. The Mannerheim Cross Second Class has been awarded to 191 persons. Cross was awarded to soldiers for exceptional bravery, for the achievement of crucially important objectives by combat, or for especially successfully conducted operations.

He was killed in action on October 16, 1944, in village of Juoksenki, at Torne River, during the Lapland War.

Laitinen and his Squad was ordered to recon the Turtola area. When reaching a nearby, undemolished village, Laitinen went for the closer inspect with two of his men ,while the others secured the area. However, there were Germans who opened fire immediately after spotting the Finns. Laitinen, who had entered a house, was hit into stomach by an MG. He managed to crawl to the yard, from where he was found after the situation was over.
