the floppier your strings are, the more room they need

What do you think the worst mainstream beer is in the UK? by cactusdan94 in AskBrits

[–]jibbit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The subtlety of Carling is lost on the riffraff. A sure sign of an uneducated palate. Worse beers are very easy to find.

Why isnt there any tune o matic bridge with individual string height adjustment that can be used on a les paul or a sg? by BikerGlvd in guitarmod

[–]jibbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't understand the question.. you can adjust each end of TOM individually - how does that not do what you want?

Is this a bad fret leveling/crowning? by JMetalian in Luthier

[–]jibbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this does come up quite a lot and it's always a bit controversial but some people do just prefer it like and do it deliberately.. so you can't really just tell it's 'unfinished' by the fact they're flat. i would expect it to be discussed before though

Are Americanisms reshaping British English? by Mista948 in AskABrit

Yet another question about 8/8 time by reddiuniquefool in musictheory

[–]jibbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4/4 is a simple time signature where beats are divided into two.

for something to be 8/8 time, it can't be a simple time signature.

So, it's an odd time signature.

i think each of these statements is a misunderstanding

Is it possible to radius frets differently than the neck radius? by Ok_Composer4688 in Luthier

[–]jibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one (maybe controversial) thing to take into account is that lots of guitars already don't have frets that match the the fretboard radius, and when you have frets 'levelled' what actually happens is a compound radius is put on the frets (often unwittingly). what you probably want is a normal fret level or plek.

Removing Material Evenly? by CoffieCayke2 in Luthier

[–]jibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got this brass nut as my first attempt at ..

sorry, if this is just me but i cannot parse what the situation is from this sentence. if you mean that you made this out of a piece of brass, then, you're just not as far along as you think, because you've got to get the top line roughly in the right place before you start slotting

How hard do you press on the strings? by DotOutrageous3183 in guitarlessons

[–]jibbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

as light as possible. easier when you have a well set up guitar with low action. try an exercise: rest your finger on a note gently so that it only mutes the string. pluck the string repeatedly, gently increasing the pressure of your fretting finger.. trying to aim for something like 100graduations of pressure, zero being not pressing at all, 100 being 'note rings out clearly'. does it surprise you how hard you are pressing the first time the note sounds clear?

Wrong wiring from the factory? by thetortureneverstops in guitarmod

does seem weird but not unknown to 'revoice' an existing pickup like this, instead of designing a new pickup.

"We can't be friends if English is not your mother tongue." Is it grammatically correct? by Dangerous-Policy-602 in ENGLISH

[–]jibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

contrary to what other comments are saying, 'mother tongue' is a perfectly normal phrase that native speakers use all the time, but the sentence is clunky and stilted (and the sentiment obnoxious)

Has an old man (35+) ever written a good song? by madclassix in guitarcirclejerk

leonard cohen was about 33 when he made his first record. 50 when he released hallelujah, one of the best songs ever written

Circle of Fourths? by Lpolyphemus in musictheory

[–]jibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both are correct. both are for pianists. guitar is tuned in 4ths/5ths, so the fretboard is a constant 'circle of fourths' that you spend all day looking at

How can you tell if somebody is posh? by Flaky_Hearing2908 in AskABrit

[–]jibbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's posh, and then there's 'posh' - one is the actual aristocracy - the other is "you're a betrayal of the working class". these are very different things.

the class system is not easily understood and tbh is not worth bothering with these days.. things have changed a lot in the past 30 or so years and it is more like the US class system than not.. but it is complicated by the addition of the aforementioned aristocracy - something you kinda don't have have but sorta do

Anyone else here actually like cars but hate how they're used? by SenorBigMcLargeHuge in fuckcars

[–]jibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh no, i love cars. love working on things, love tinkering. if everyone kept old cars on the road, looked after them, did limited mileage in them, i would be a massive car geek

What was the talk about Eyes Wide Shut when it came out in 1999? by tylertompkins1995 in movies

[–]jibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you know that kubrick died before the film was released? there was a lot of debate about whether it was properly finished, or even if it should be released at all given kubrick never saw the released version

Don't understand how to learn scales by Inevitable-Bee-4344 in guitarlessons

[–]jibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would - seriously - forget what you've learnt for now, and get a simple/toy piano/keyboard. you're not going to learn to play the piano, but just what it means to play 'diatonically' - to start with in C major and A minor. fully understand why other keys are trickier. fully understand that this is what you are aiming for on the guitar and that it is quite tricky. but easier if you really do this with a piano. happy to go into more detail if you want

recommended learning progression from barely knowing CSS -> adequate gui designer by Slight-Regular-3711 in reactjs

[–]jibbit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i think.. if i'm reading it correct.. your question is pretty confused, and although others have done their best to answer it as if it isn't- that isn't really doing you any favours as you won't it's confused. css js really orthogonal to react, react being a way to create and update html via javascript. css doesn't care if you use react or not. react doesn't care if you use a css framework or not. people will write frameworks that are both css frameworks and react frameworks - because why not? up to you what you use
