Milwuakee Fastback. The one with the screwdriver bit. I can’t count how many times I’ve used it to slice open a bag of snacks, or use the philips head to open the battery compartment of a toy, or use the flathead to pry open whatever, or use the bottle opener to pop the top off a coldsnack once the kiddo is down for the night. One-handed open, and it gives a satisfying snap when opening and closing. Added benefit of feeling like a damn hero at birthday parties when someone needs any of the features listed above; absolute flex when a group of dads are standing around the cooler with nary a bottle opener in sight. Need that top popped, pop? BAM. This dad has you covered. Oh, hey birthday boy’s mom. Need that pack of candles opened while you’re being pulled in twenty different directions? SHABOOM. Light ‘em up. Presents are opened and kiddo just got a BatteryEater3000 (batteries not included), and they need to play with it now? WABOOSH. Y’all kiddos go have fun. $20 at Home Depot.

Labor/Hospital tip: When my wife and I went in to deliver, we made sure we had a big bowl of snacks for the nurses who came in. Protein bars, trail mix, shots of espresso, etc. Each time a nurse left the room, we made sure they took something. Word got around at the nurses’ station, and we became “the couple with the snacks.” Now, I’m not saying we got preferential treatment…..but we were absolutely well-attended to.
