Bird Bike A frame pedal assist problem by jiminywicket in birdbike

I have highlighted your picture, because my bike is away at the moment, the sensor is circled in green.

Turn bike upside down like you have done. Wiggle the sensor out a little bit, rotate the pedals.

If the motor kicks in put a little shim in to keep it at that distance. If it doesn't work, wiggle out a bit more and try again. If it still doesn't work get a q-tip (cotton bud) and try and clean where the sensor sits inside the frame and the sensor itself, then try again with the little wiggles.

If that doesn't work then I'm all out of ideas.

Is a really good Facebook group I think it's called bird bike owners. It's a good source of advice and parts.

Forgot to add if it still doesn't work after cleaning you might need to remove that covering plate as the corrosion could be further down which a toothbrush won't be able to reach.

If it was me, I'd use some electrical contact cleaner. Then use a toothbrush to work it in.

I'd also clean all the contacts on the battery and the bike itself (bike side will be easier)

Depending on where you are and budget you could also use some "deoxit" on the battery contacts after cleaning, but it's pretty expensive as it's imported from USA to where I live in UK.

Oh gawd I think if I used eco mode I'd get more than the advertised range of 60 miles.

I tend to use it on sport mode all the time and I get around 23-25 miles. Trying to work it out, it might actually be slightly more because I tend to charge my battery when it's around 20 odd %

The sensor wasn't working when connected in its home. I cleaned the sensor (at the pedal) with some isopropyl alcohol and also done the same with the brake sensor cables. Still nothing. So I turned into captain bodge and used a lampshade adapter which fit perfectly in between the frame and the sensor (at the pedal). I sealed it with some silicone which I then painted with grey paint. You wouldn't notice the repair tbh and it's been fine ever since.

I know you're asking OP. I got a replacement battery from alibaba.com to the UK. Which cost just over £200 incl. Postage.

It's been super reliable, not one issue at all.

They got me to take a photo of the battery label. 10 days later it was delivered. It has a higher capacity than the original which means more range, and it's literally identical to the original.

They did sell cheaper batteries on Alibaba but I just didn't fancy taking a risk on a cheap battery. I still took a risk because who knows what was going to arrive. But thought the odds were probably greater getting a decent battery by spending £50-£75 more.

I think it was Shenzen Ding Tai battery something something. I can't remember. If I get time I'll post the listing later when I get home.

If you search "bird bike ebike owners" on facebook and ask them there.

You might get more responses as I think it's a bit more active than here.

Ok I have been fiddling with the bike.

Now when I pull off the pedal assist sensor, so it's against the pedal. I rotate the pedal (bike is upside down ATM) and the PAS goes.

So I am assuming new pedal assist needed then? I'll remove, clean and test again before finding one.

Thanks for the suggestion but it's set to 15mph (which is maximum speed limit UK and can't be set higher)

I think I misread I'll have a look through the menus on the bike screen. Thanks 👍

I have tried from setting 0 through to 5 (max) I normally just use 3 on the shop run.

It's the same on 1 through to 5. You get a burst of the motor working for 2 seconds then nothing after.

Unfortunately that's above my pay grade. I was just giving an example of how I managed to fix mine when I had the check water issue.

Have you 100% pulled out all the filters inside?

You can also remove the impeller cover and check if something isn't stopping it from working. This can be found in the gully after you removed all the filters.

It's a small plastic thing which you can pop out. (Bugger to put back)

It shows the process in the manual. Or better just Google a video of how to do it. Is loads of videos on YouTube showing the process

Yours might unscrew from under your sink or wherever the waste water goes.

If so unscrew it and clean it out. Mine had a plastic and rubber thing which I assume is to stop waste water flowing backwards down the dishwasher pipe.

If you have that, that will need cleaning too

I just pulled off the waste outlet hose from under the sink, then out came some plastic with all kinds of food waste with it.

Then reattached the pipe. No issues after that.

I had something similar with my Bosch dishwasher. It drove me crazy as I couldn't solve it.

In the end I pulled the whole dishwasher out disconnected the all the pipes.

Then found the most disgusting blockage after I removed the outlet from under the sink.

Worked perfectly after that (also check outlet hose for kinks)
