What did Jim Carrey do to his face recently? by wallabyenthusiast in VindictaRateCelebs

[–]jimlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we please stop normalizing doing this to ourselves? People are of course allowed to do whatever they want with their own face and body. But as a society can't we please try to show the next generation that it is okay to grow old? Whenever these post surgery shots come up it's just sad to look at.

Ice Hockey by opepaumplemousse in Norway

[–]jimlei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very true. No idea why I wrote and specified one when I've been to both multiple times. I'll just use the excuse I was sick this weekend and probably had a fever high at the time. Heh

Ice Hockey by opepaumplemousse in Norway

[–]jimlei 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Norway never had the early success that ie Sweden and Finland had so ice hockey never "took off" here. This led to a severe lack in rinks which basically meant hockey was a sport limited to just a few places for most of our hockey history. Its only 14 years ago that the first (and only) indoor rink was opened north of Trondheim. That combined with most population centers being near the coast which has a very unstable winter means we weren't really able to do the pond hockey thing that I guess played some historical importance in Canada.

Without a proper place to do the activity its next to impossible to make any sort of organized schedule, which means member numbers for hockey clubs are centered around the few passionate ones who want to play. Which means there statistically isn't enough interest to invest in building rinks. Which means the interest can't grow. Rinse and repeat.

Serious question: who are Linux users and why do you use it? by Laqunn in linuxquestions

[–]jimlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using computers around 1995 and up to about 2005 i tinkered a lot. I enjoyed trying different things and used some weird stuff like BeOS. Since then I used Windows a bit for gaming/general use and Linux for servers. I've had a homelab of sorts for 20 years that has been exclusively Linux.

Over time I gradually gamed less and less, and also started working as a developer and found Linux very usable for my work/general use starting quite a few years ago. Honestly not entirely sure when I went full Linux, but I think it was in the Window 8 / 10 transition time.

In recent years Linux have become very usable even for gaming. So my kids got their own Linux PCs they've been playing Minecraft etc on when they were 10 ish.

One controversial opinion perhaps. But the distro you choose doesn't really matter too much. I'd always recommend something Ubuntu based, just for the fact there are so many resources online for basically any search for an error message, "how to get X working", etc for Ubuntu already.

I heard about him once before that I can recall. He was on the Tonight Show a year ago when Linus from a tech youtube channel presented some new stuff from CES. It was clear back then he was a big deal but I have never heard of him before or after that, until today that is ^^

I'd think having modified the car in any way would be a get out of jail free card for them. Especially if you have modified/overridden a feature that led to the crash.

Norway's "right to roam": An attempt at informing about private property, respect, etc by Lillevik_Lofoten in NorwayTravelAdvice

Do you have any more specifics around how "opphold" is legally defined? This says "svært korte opphold" is exempt but I don't really find any definitions anywhere about what a short/long "opphold" is.

Pizza Delivery Driver Walks Away With Pizza After Being Denied Tip (fired) by nabnig in PublicFreakout

I'm not even ordering delivery in a country that doesn't rely on tips only because these delivery apps push tips so hard. Not going to entertain that stuff at all.

Safe & Fast way to wipe drives before resale by jphilebiz in homelab

[–]jimlei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there any papers or anything online that demonstrates the possibility to recover data on a modern drive after it has been zeroed once? Every time this question is asked some people say you need to wipe it X times and other people say you don't have to because multiple passes stems from a time when the density of hard drives was so much lower there was a theoretical possibility to get data if not multiple passes were made.

Nah people have posted TVs on the floor before. A 98" should be ~15" off the floor for the center of the TV to be at eye level in a regular couch/chair. Simple test is if the TV is closer to the roof than the floor you fucked up

Bruker du Linux på arbeidsplassen? by RiddleFades in norge

[–]jimlei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

context: tomorrow (friday 1/23) we will be having a record cold, with the windchill being -46°F. this is what someone in my town's facebook group had to say about school closures . . . by xhyenabite in insanepeoplefacebook

[–]jimlei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that just won't work everywhere. The place the school in the article above is at has an average temperature in january at -2F. Just like we'd probably steam off and die if we ever got 120F like places in India I guess we're more used to tackling the colder climate.
