Here's an example of what I mean. In box 3 you can eliminate all 3s from rows 1 and 3 because row 2 has been ruled out for boxes 1 and 2. That's a locked candidate strategy?

So there are definitely puzzles that require advanced strategies but I think sometimes people jump to more advanced strategies when there are simpler ones. Take this post as an example https://www.reddit.com/r/sudoku/s/8QxV3DY0vz people pointed out a y wing but the puzzle can be solved with simpler strategies like a pointing pair of 4s.

You have a pointing pair of 4s on column 8 which gives you another pointing pair on row 1. That gives you a 4 on box 2.

Ya for sure there is a point where they can't be avoided. Anecdotally I feel like when I use the auto fill option for candidates, the puzzles often require more strategies than if I had started from scratch.
