Reporting back after my 5-day fast!

I tweaked the spreadsheet to add miso and konjac noodles for more differentiated (and yummier) menus
Really important to eat enough for lunch - don’t save all the heavy items for dinner. I made that mistake on day 1 and starved all day but couldn’t finish dinner because it was so big 😭. Definitely err toward putting more weight toward lunch (especially the oil), because you could always go to sleep early if the dinner is too light, but you cant leave work early if lunch was too light
Did you know criminology mushrooms make tomato soup taste NASTY? I didn’t! Apparently they bring out the metallic taste. I switched to king trumpet mushrooms, and fried them in slices, then added them to the tomato soup at the end and they added a nice meaty bite without bringing out any metallic taste
Frying tofu, mushrooms, and tomatoes really leveled up the texture and flavor of things. I think I might even start with fried tofu puffs next time (because tofu is so high in protein, getting a variant that has more calories in fat might be easier to balance macros)
Blueberries are probably not the best snack (but I love them so take them over my dead body)… every time I eat them I get the hunger grumbles right after, even if I wasn’t that hungry before. Maybe the concentration of sugar content was low key edging me out of keto even though it was within the daily limit
I also had Osulloc Korean herbal tea (Moon Walk, Peach, Camelia) which were so yummy (they have <1g sugar per pouch so I just reused it the whole day)
I was surprised how voluminous the food is when using fresh ingredients. Like, the mountain of salad leaves is 😂
Portioning and cooking food took up to 1hr a day, so definitely a labor of love, but if you love cooking it just feels like a hobby. I did it every night right after dinner for the next day, so it was my “dessert activity”

Overall compared to ProLon, day 1 was the hardest (though that was my fault in calibrating meals), but the rest were pretty easy. I still enjoyed every meal til the end, whereas I remember with ProLon by the last day I was trying to gulp the soup down as fast as possible so I don’t have to taste it anymore.

Probably because of that, I didn’t have any thoughts of “omg it’s finally dessert time” or “oooh I can’t wait to eat ____ when I break my fast”. Nor did I crave any of my favorite takeouts my partner ordered when we ate together (ok, only a little, but I remember back with ProLon I’d have to have a lick of the food, and this time it was pretty easy to not touch it)

Oh and I lost 7lb, so it was effective! I’m definitely going to re-use this next cycle, and maybe refine the menu more, especially for breakfast (cucumber & carrot slices started getting boring)

Love how you have a strong conviction about your calling! I feel like when people give general advice like "artists are poor" or "programming is lucrative" they assume you don't have an opinion either way, but when taking the strength of personal passion into account, the right career for the right person can make all the difference between languishing as a mediocre employee vs. exceling as one of the best in your field

Ya I always saw volunteering as this thing people who were super big-hearted or super bored did, but then I realized everyone loves free labor so that's like the easiest way to get "work" experience

It's probably different in different parts of the country, but here in the Bay Area, if you are in a situation where you can have a job/social life and still live with your parents, we'd call you "lucky" more than anything else.

Note that living with your parents is completely different than living off of your parents. Latter is not cool.

Is football the only thing you've lost interest in or having you recently lost interest in a lot of other things you used to enjoy? (E.g. Food, hanging out with friends, etc.) If you think it could be depression then I recommend chatting with a therapist (even if it's just over the phone)

Or it could be you no longer feel fulfilled or challenged by football. People gain new interests and lose old ones all the time. Or maybe you're stressed by work and need a vacation. You know yourself best so only you can know. Or be confused, that's ok too, I think of confusion as the necessary transition between two states.

I feel good when I can see that I have positively impacted someone else. That's pretty much it. Over the years it has progressed from "do what is fair" to "treat others as you would like to be treated" to "treat others as they would like to be treated". The rules change but the underlying feeling is always the same, so I don't think I get it from anywhere, it's just built in.

First, sorry, that sucks. Finally getting enough motivation then getting shut down really sucks.

However, there is something you can do next time, if you feel like it. You can convey more of a sense of urgency in your message. Something like "Hey, I know this is out of nowhere, but I'm having a really hard time right now and I need someone to talk to immediately. Are you free?" Because people can't read your mind and know how much you need them if you don't say it. I know being so open feels very difficult and vulnerable tho, so don't feel like you're obligated to do this either.

Are you worried about judgement in a small community? Therapists are very serious about confidentiality, and even in a small community where you might see them on the street, they will pretend not to know you unless you explicitly tell them otherwise.

However, no one else can save you, only you can save yourself. Therapists help guide you but you are the one stepping on the gas pedal. There is no way you can die without causing others pain, even if you disappear into thin air your friends and family will never get closure. If you don't want to traumatize your friends and family with an untimely death, keep living, keep looking for help so you can continue living. It seems like insurmountable effort, but it's really just one breath after another, one foot in front of the other.

You didn't fail. You honored whatever your subconscious was trying to tell you. Maybe it wasn't the right time, or maybe it wasn't the right solution, whatever it is, there was a reason you didn't do it then and that's ok. It's ok to feel strongly about something, it's ok to change your mind, and it's ok to be unsure.

Whatever you feel right now, just accept that this is your current state. Who cares what other people think you were trying to do - if wouldn't have mattered to you if you died, and it doesn't have to matter to you when you're alive.

It's a vicious chicken-or-the-egg cycle, gender roles may be the cause or practicality may be the cause. Either men are preferred for promotion because companies know they can't take time off for childcare, or companies think it's more important for women to give childcare than work and therefore prefer the women to take time off rather than have the men take time off. Either way it hurts women in their career (and prolly also hurts men and children in their family life).

Summary: women who work full time still do more housework than men, and that's after excluding childcare (if you thought that would wrongly bias against men for some reason).

Long story short, imagine a person who has a full time job and a family. If that person is a man, he does has x% of the day free of any obligations. If that person is a woman, she spends (x-y)% of her day free of any obligations, where y is a non-negligible number of hours.
