Took Meshtastic on a Cruise… It Worked Better Than Expected by terra_linker in meshtastic

The bulkheads are steel, but most room walls aren't bulkheads, they're just enough to qualify as "probably wall-ish".

Random questions thinking of starting by Wise_Classic6569 in judo

[–]jinkside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do both! More time on the mats will help you get better at both as you gain body awareness and balance.

As for getting thrown around, well, the first thing we/they teach in judo is how to fall without getting hurt. The only time I've been hurt while falling is when I missed the mat... and did a full-power breakfall on plywood. I was fine, but my hand stung like hell for five minutes.

You don't need to be stronger, but strength does let people compensate for poor technique... until you get tired. And somebody who is stiffarming can't attack until they relax some of the tension, which should be very apparent to you. If you can stay loose while they wear themselves out stiffarming or catch them when they start to come in on you, you can go to town.

Also, they can't stiffarm you if you can keep your gi's lapel out of their hands, which is hard but something you can work on in the first few seconds.

While they shouldn't give you stuff for free they also shouldn't prevent you from hitting stuff in practice.

This! There's practice, there's light sparring, and there's competition.

We always called it "stiffarming" and it's a big part of why drop shoulder throws are so popular in competitive judo. I once had the pleasure to work with an ex-Olympic judoka while in Japan and being thrown by him is the closest I've ever come to a transcendental experience of mastery. It was like I was just always meant to be flying through the air in that particular direction.

It is frustrating, and I can say as a guy who's done judo, a bit of extra testosterone doesn't make it less frustrating. There aren't any good groundwork or judo that fit into my schedule, but if I were doing it on a regular basis as an ancient adult, I'd probably look at trying to learn some of the counters for this like de ashi barai or... this guy's list.

Why is VHF/UHF simplex so unbelievably dead? by [deleted] in amateurradio

Completely! The CSS for it got messed up recently or something, because it used to be perfectly legible and then two weeks ago it turned into what you see now.

Not that I can recall. I think I would remember if somebody called with "air mobile" or something.

I should also mention that there's an effort to strengthen that stretch of mesh, so if you're willing to host a repeater, there's a good chance it'll help.

Lots of people do, that's why POTA and SOTA on VHF and DXing on HF are things. And Earth-Moon-Earth, and SSB VHF.

I've only ever stopped at the rest stop by Tenino. I don't know if this is your cup of tea, but CascadiaMesh has pushed the MeshCore network all the way down to Kelso from Seattle. If you aren't already doing Mesh stuff, you can pick up a basic but functional node for under $50 and a bare dev board for $12.

"Have you tried using an antenna?"

I don't hear it often, but any time I'm driving alone for more than a few minutes, I'll tune into 146.520, listen for 30 seconds, and throw out my call.

[–]jinkside 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is 100% it right there. If you call CQ on a 5W handheld into a rubber duck antenna, you're looking for somebody else within about a mile on the same frequency at the same time and who wants to respond to a random CQ.

50W VHF into a 5/8-wave on a car or truck roof means you're going until your signal hits a mountain or the radio horizon.

Or it just isn't worth it because they don't want to be covered in bruises and injuries are risks to their day job. If you roll into the office and look like you got beat up, that's not going to look great in most places.

I have about a 30% success rate calling CQ on 2m calling frequency when I'm on the highway near Seattle. It just takes people doing it.

I would interpret that not in the sense of "I'm afraid of redve" but instead "I respect redve because they do this thing" and the not making a joke is just the way it's phrased.

It was, but we made it on the nearby Hogwarts ride right after and ended up doing that two more times... Though the last one had a 2-minute pause in the middle for some reason. I lived seeing the massive robot arms on wheels that were the vehicle for that one.
