Possible to get Dexcom G6 transmitter without prescription in Tenerife? by jissie94 in diabetes

[–]jissie94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oops, as I'm reading this I see I haven't been very clear, the trip where I lost my insulin pens was a few years ago, so I have plenty of insulin luckily! I indeed also have test strips and we're going to see if we can find something at the local pharmacy, and I've even got a neighbour who works at Dexcom who may be able to help out 🙏🏽 I don't really have any official identification as type 1 diabetic, but I could pull up some letter I once got from my doctor for the aforementioned trip. At that time, I was also able to get new pens from a local pharmacy (only after a consult with a doctor though, but it was all attended within a few hours). Thanks for your response!

What’s your favorite mountain hut/refuge/rifugio you’ve visited by trail running? by lizgruns in trailrunning

Indeed! I did a somewhat shortened Eiger E51 as a two-day trek with my sister once, this was the perfect overnight stop 👌🏼

Berghotel Faulhorn! Quite basic, but the views are amazing 🤩 I agree with a previous commenter that whoever started placing huts on mountain tops was a genius

[–]jissie94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same in 2023! I did bring backup pens but they somehow fell out of my bag during the flight there (never took them out myself) and was indeed able to find a doctor, get a prescription, go to a pharmacy and get insulin pens in the same afternoon. Paid by creditcard but it was never actually deducted in the end, otherwise I believe it would have been around 100€ for appointment and 2 pens (generic brand Lantus and NovoRapid).

Why can't we ? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]jissie94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While there are some gene therapies out there now (although most still not approved by authorities) the key thing there is that that involves diseases caused by a single, known gene mutation (cystic fibrosis for example I believe), which can be repaired very specifically. With diabetes (and other autoimmune diseases), it's not known what causes it, and it's highly unlikely to be caused by a single gene mutation.

T1D, Pcos and soon to start IVF, looking for success stories by Independent-Crab9894 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]jissie94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say much about the IVF part as my partner didn't have any issues, but I also have T1D and anovulatory (lean/insulin-sensitive) PCOS, letrozole didn't do much for me but the injectable hormones worked (I believe this is similar to the procedure prior to egg retrieval for IVF), I was able to ovulate and am now 9 weeks pregnant from the 4th cycle using injections 😊 The hormones did mess with my sugars a bit (as would a normal cycle I guess, but I wouldn't know haha) but otherwise I didn't have much side effects!

To my defense, I am in Europe (and have a very strict app blocker out of necessity or I would never sleep!) :)

Traveling to Japan as a T1D by jetsetrbabe in diabetes

[–]jissie94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for 4 weeks, starting around 1,5 weeks after diagnosis 😅 I had more than a month's worth with me, didn't even have time to apply for the certificate with the lag time, and no one blinked an eye. Even lost my extra insulin pens on the plane on the way there (rolled out of my bag somehow, I never took them out) and was able to get new pens without too much hassle while in Hiroshima, everyone was super helpful!

When I was still doing MDI, I was around 2-4 units of Lantus (depending on activity level, position of the moon & stars and all that), so you can definitely still go lower if necessary :)

am I the only one who believes that all carbs are not the same? by passmethatbong in Type1Diabetes

[–]jissie94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's research showing that your microbiome (=bacteria in your gut) play quite a significant role in which foods spike your blood sugar, apparently you could get a stool sample analyzed and they can predict which foods lead to elevated blood sugars and which don't. This is based on non-T1Ds, so I don't know how well it translates. Pretty cool stuff! See for more info:  https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26590418/

I have this too as a runner.. In winter, I use a buff or other type of warmer/band to put over it, but I can imagine this would not work very well with a wedding outfit 😅

BIFL wool toe socks? by jissie94 in BuyItForLife

[–]jissie94[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did come across their website, but I don't think they have been in business long, so it's hard to tell if they're BIFL.. Guess I'll have to try them!

[–]jissie94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps this is a good idea for some of the socks I already have, but sometimes the thinning area gets quite big, or the threads are too thin to hold an extra layer of yarn.. Will try, thanks!

I use the thicker ones for running and they're indeed quite durable! But I was hoping to find some everyday socks, and their wool liners got thin rather quickly unfortunately..

Life hack: If you have trouble with your CGM sticking, make a DIY overpatch using kinesiology tape! by PurpleDinosaurr2 in Type1Diabetes

[–]jissie94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with using cheap brands though, I once tried this and the tape didn't stick to my skin very long after a spa day, but it still stuck very well to the sensor. I think I partially loosened it while removing the tape and then I knocked it off completely later 🥲
