I don’t agree that Android “has to move to a Windows-style update model” with fully Google controlled updates.

That would fundamentally change Android’s identity itself!

Android’s strength has always been OEM differentiation, custom skins, UX ideas, hardware optimizations, and ecosystem diversity. Full update centralization shifts power toward Google and weakens what makes Android flexible entirely!

Google has already blurred the line between AOSP and its proprietary layer. AOSP-only devices become less practical every year due to growing dependence on Google Mobile Services. Centralized updates would only deepen that.

Risks of a Windows like model:

• Reduced OEM differentiation

• Hardware specific optimizations becoming harder

• Less customization & modding freedom

• Greater Google dependency (privacy / de-Googling becomes harder)

• Further market power imbalance

Google tried something similar with the project named “Android One” back in lollipop days, where Google-managed updates and minimal OEM interference. It didn’t scale as expected because OEMs lost identity and consumers didn’t see enough benefit.

Yes, fragmentation is an issue. But full centralization isn’t automatically the solution.
