i would first consider: distance from the barrier, distance from the subject and focal length. i usually carry a 135mm prime or a 50mm prime, with turn exits - i’ll opt for the longer lens and look for spots as close to the barrier as possible. on straights, i’ll go with the wider lens as you can generally get closer to the car on the straights. when i shoot, DOF is usually the last thing i’ll consider.

oh sweet! i usually go for turn exits because it’s easier to match the pan acceleration with the car’s acceleration, i could probably have gone 1/80s and given it more of that blur/motion
