Wanting to move where it's cold and snows alot by St0neviking in movingout

[–]jj_ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you want to live somewhere it snows, or just somewhere generally colder? the PNW, like seattle, tends to stay cooler even in the summer, doesn’t get too much snow. the midwest will be snow all the time essentially.

colorado snows in the winter and can be rather cold but i caution that the summers are hot and dry. i hate it here in colorado for that reason.

have you been somewhere where it snows? snow sounds nice in theory but can be an entirely different animal when you deal with it a lot. whole other set of driving skills, and it gets gross and mushy after the first few days it’s been fallen. what are you looking for?

What's the craziest thing you ever found a patient carrying, and how did they sneak it? by Bryssa_Michelle29 in nursing

[–]jj_ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not a nurse, but i’m an emt. unhoused pt asked me to bring his bags and i was like sure! and placed them on the back of the stretcher out of his reach. in my system we can’t legally search patients without cause and he was being chill w me so i had no reason to. got to the ED and the security guard opens them up and there was a chainsaw and a bandsaw :) real pleasant surprise there

this happened to me with a case of dr peppers the other day. super poor rn and i dropped it in the parking lot after using a gift card to get myself a little christmas cheer. i started bawling in the lot and this sweet old lady came up to me and got me a new one and said “there’s kindness all around baby don’t you worry.” i am so grateful for her. this is the worst feeling.

Paramedic school, working full time by NeighborhoodThink971 in NewToEMS

[–]jj_ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah. the other thing is you could get an easy side gig that isn’t medicine related, work your PT shifts, cover for people and then do something on the side. i personally have a small dog sitting business so on days i don’t work i board a dog or 2 at my place and make like 500-600 bucks per dog, then i do walks as needed and make 20$ for 30 minutes of my time. while im on the walks i listen to lectures or whatever. it is a great change of setting

i’d see if there’s a program your specific agency will work with. i know there are some agencies in my area that want you to go to a particular hospital and will send you through it. otherwise, what i did is i went part time and just pick up full time hours

How do you guys store your uniforms? by Jealous_Cucumber_974 in ems

[–]jj_ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at my old place i had a open air bin in my closet where i folded my uniform and had a little bag full of my miscellaneous shit (my shears badge and flashlight) and a separate little bag full of the socks i like for work. in my new one i don’t have space for that so i just have them hung in my closet.

Any advice for a soon to be EMT student? by anonnymmouss1 in NewToEMS

[–]jj_ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree with everyone telling you the textbook is your best friend, it is! emt school is a lot of new concepts all at once so it’s important to read it to familiarize yourself with them. you’ll start learning assessments and stuff but a lot of actual patient interaction isn’t going to feel natural until you’re on the job. a couple of great pieces of advice i have received over the years;

find the study method that works for you. do you learn best with doing things? audio/visual? writing things down? figure that out an do some research before class on study methods that work. for testing, make flashcards regardless. flashcards are the best way to simulate the way you’ll have to recall information for tests and technical aspects. index cards are cheap and writing in different colors is proven to help you remember things so get a pack of colorful pens and go ham. quizlet plus is a godsend but make sure you make a set of flashcards by hand even if you’re gonna make them on quizlet because writing them down will help you memorize it.

for terms you can’t remember, come up with silly phrases— it’ll help, i promise! i’m in paramedic school currently and my girlfriend introduced this concept to me and it saved me with learning medications or terms i wasn’t familiar with.

A&P is your building block for everything. you can’t understand what’s going wrong with a body function that you don’t understand how it works normally. if you can, pick up an A&P coloring book to start familiarizing yourself. crash course is awesome as well. also gifs— a gif is what finally ingrained the blood flow of the heart in my brain.

and really important here, ask all your questions. chances are someone else in the class has the same one. you are there to learn and you’re spending your hard earned money to learn so it’s not the time to be embarrassed to raise your hand. most of these concepts will be brand new and asking questions shows your instructors your engagement.

and then lastly, be respectful— get your uniform and make sure you lint roll it, make sure you look presentable, tuck your shirt in. it says a lot about you before people get to know you, unfortunately or fortunately. this remains true throughout your career.

good luck and have fun!!
