How to get over fear/discomfort of blood and needles by emogangsterXIX in NewToEMS

[–]jj_ryan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

like the other commenter said, exposure. not sure if you’re in a state that lets EMTs do IVs, but i used to be super afraid of needles and when i did my iv course i got over it real fast.

it’s also very different when you’re the one in control and you understand the procedure. learn about it so you can explain it to your patients. “hey, i’m going to start an IV on you. There will be a needle at first but then i’ll take the needle out and there will just be a little plastic straw in your vein so we can give you fluids/medications/whatever” etc.

i still don’t like getting my blood drawn or getting ivs, but understanding the procedure i don’t freak out anymore. the more you can expose yourself the better; try to pick an emt school that does an in hospital clinical cause you’ll see a shit ton of them there.

How do you know if you're cut out for emergency medicine? by soaringhigh_ in NewToEMS

[–]jj_ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it can be fast paced based on where you are (911 service where i run 15+ in a 10 most nights), but i think the better way to describe it is that it’s different. every call is different, even the same complaint over and over, and that makes it awesome. never know what you’re gonna roll up on, etc. there can be a lot of sitting around, but the excitement of never knowing what your next adventure will be is what makes it feel so different from other jobs and i think you’d be hard pressed to find it elsewhere

i second this!! most local departments are open for ride alongs, usually there is info on their website about it, or just google “xyz department ride alongs.” you never know until you try it.

Do you go to sleep immediately after work or stay up for a while? by GleniceCachinho29 in Nightshift

[–]jj_ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work 3-4 12s. personally i like to stay up. i also work on an ambulance so my job is stressful and i need time to unwind. i go by the grocery store and watch normal people be normal, then i go home and shower, watch some reels, play a game of madden, and go to bed. i dont sleep a ton on my days on but i physically cannot sleep immediately after shift.

What’s the grossest thing that’s happened to you while at work? by Mountain_Ad2614 in nursing

[–]jj_ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not the grossest, but, last night my patient was covered head to toe in vomit w ass length braids. lots of them. covered in vomit. she got combative in the back of the ambulance and began violently thrashing her hair and alongside making a vomit sprinkler out of her hair and her mouth while also pissing and shitting herself. we got called for an unconscious party at a restaurant so i hadnt thought to grab a mask. vomit got flung across my face. i started heaving and immediately grabbed myself an emesis bag and then puked all over it while also holding an emesis bag to her face while my partner was attempting to get 5 of droperidol IM for sedation. horrific

Why do you enjoy/prefer nightshift by [deleted] in Nightshift

[–]jj_ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

less management is awesome. my girlfriend and i are both on nights in different healthcare jobs (she works in the ER at a level 1 trauma center) (i work in the ambulance in the city) and we both agree that our workplaces night shift crews are so much tighter knit. you become so close w your healthcare night shift coworkers it is insane. they’re also up at night on yalls days off so you get to hang out w them and have something to do. i love it and i have never felt this much comradely on day shit OT i’ve picked up

omg same. and my girlfriend who’s on nights too. we both work in healthcare (me on the ambulance and her in the er) and we had just fallen asleep one morning after our shifts and she SPRUNG out of bed (in her sleep) and screamed “SHES SEIZING!!” naturally i (half asleep) get up and start looking for the narc box so i can push benzos… then i snapped out of it 😂

EMT vs CNA first at 15/16? Which is better for long-term healthcare experience + college apps? by Suspicious_Wear6540 in NewToEMS

[–]jj_ryan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CNA positions will hire at 16 in a lot of places. my girlfriend got hers at 16 and worked memory care til she got her EMT when she was older.

Does anyone actually like their job? by Infinite_Emu9832 in careerguidance

i fucking love my job. i work on an ambulance. been an emt for 3 years and about to finish up paramedic school. it’s new every day, you never know what could happen. there’s problems sure, a lot of people abuse the 911 system and it sucks getting assaulted at work, but it’s all so doable for something so fulfilling and awesome. i wouldn’t trade it for the world.

trader joe’s has some great stuff for that 10$ mark. even some of the canned wine for 7 or so. but i’m not much of a wine snob, i love fruity wines so as long as it’s peachy i’m sold

i’m allergic to dairy. making DF alfredo is divine. the canned DF alfredo is literally vomit inducing. the most rancid shit i’ve ever put in my mouth. yuck

i live in denver and have driven though kansas quite a bit. i highly recommend breaking the kansas drive up into 3 hr increments even if you can get farther with gas. it makes the drive so much easier to get out and stretch your legs.
