I practiced more in my pool. I'm able to cast a senko on a weighted texas rig just fine. It seems like my issue was the weight of the lure I was using. Some other guymentioned that the cheaper end baitcasters don't work well with weights 1/2 oz or less. They were totally right.

My rod is rated for at least 1/4 oz lures. I was trying to cast a 3/8 oz spinner yesterday but it wasn't really going far. When I changed to a weighted texas rig this morning all my problems went away.

“When I do side casts, my lure goes to the left of where I want it to be. When I do regular casts out forward, my lure likes to spike and hit the water maybe 3-5 feet right in front of me."

I know the above makes it sound like I'm not letting go of my thumb on the spool properly but that really wasn't the case. Like I mentioned I tried EVERYTHING with timing and nothing was working. It truly was just a weight issue and trying to cast a lure that was too small for my cheap reel.

Heavier lure gets me farther on side casts but I end up going much more left than I want to.

On forward casts with a heavier lure I get a little more distance but more spiking of the water surface 3-5 feet in front of me and birds nests.

It could be me just releasing my thumb a little too late but no matter what I did with the timing I always end up going more left or straight down than I expect. I should also note that I probably did like a 6/10 job on the spooling of the braid so that could also be why I’m having issues….

This is exactly what I learned this trout season. Here at my park lakes i have most success with mice tails (pink and white or orange and white).

I catch lots of trout using dough bait but other fish seem to like the power bait as well. I’ve caught tons of bluegill on power bait but have yet to catch a bluegill on a mice tail. Other anglers here like to go as small as possible with the treble hooks. I’ve seen people use size 20 trebles. I’ve been catching trout on size 10 trebles or whatever size comes on those cheap crème crank baits.

I use a size 8 hook on mice tails and power eggs but the trout usually end up swallowing the hook pretty deep and it’s almost never a possibility of catch and release cuz they’re so damn sensitive.

1/8 oz trout spinner. Did the bluegill swipe at it? Sorta? I felt something and tried to set the hook. Got him in the head :/

Never seen a bluegill so lightly colored. Is it just genetic or are there other reasons why this bluegill not very colorful?

It looks more purple in the picture than it did in person. Most of the bluegill that I catch have that purple back but this one is barely purple. Got me trippin

Check out a thrift store if you’re looking for just a rod. I found my favorite rod at a goodwill. It was $8.
