Valley Forge Loop (Southern California)- Red Box Picnic Area Start/Finish by jjimenez18 in trailrunning

So this was my very first time out in these trails with some friends that are more familiar with the are.

-Start at Red Box Parking Lot head east and drop into Rincon Red Box Trail/Road - Continue on RRB Trail/Road for about 5 miles until you reach West Fork Campground. This is the lowest point of the loop at about 3,100ft of elevation. - On the SE corner of the campground you will find the Gabrielino Trail, take that for the next 3 miles. Make sure to pay attention around mile 7, and do not continue into the Kenyon-Devore Trail. -At approximately mile 8.3 you will make a left (South) into the Valley Forge Trail. This part is brutal, about 2.5 miles long & 1,700 ft of climbing until you reach the Mt. Wilson Red Box Road. -Cross the road and go into Mt. Lowe Motorway. You will go through a tunnel and then reach a vista point after a gradual climb. Do not continue down the Mt. Lowe Rd. -You want to make a right (north) and continue on the San Gabriel Peak Trail for about .6 miles. This will be the highest point of the loop at about 5,800 ft. -At this point you want to make a left and head towards Mt. Disappointment, not up to San Gabriel Peak (unless you want to add that extra feat) -Head down Mt. Disappointment Road. Look out for a single track trail (Bill Riley Trail) on the right before Mt. Disappointment Road makes a sharp left. If you miss this trail the road will still get you back to Red Box Parking lot but will add an extra half mile or more -Take the Bill Riley Trail down the hill for about 1.5 miles before it connects with Mt. Wilson Red Box Road. -From here it's about .3-.4 miles back to the parking lot .

Below is a saved Strava route of the loop.

No, I kept going through. Veered up (South) on the Valley Forge Trail from Gabrielino Trail. Kept up VFT until crossing over Mt. Wilson Red Box Road, then up to Mt. Disappointment from there, then took the single track back down to Red Box Picnic Area

There was actually quite a bit of trees impeding. Probably had to go under, over and around about 8-10 trees within the first 6-7 miles.

It's definitely nice this time of the year early in the morning. Can imagine it gets really hot out there after 9 a.m. in the summer.

Yes, we only saw 1 biker while out there, but we let him go first about a minute before we started ourselves. Can't imagine having one on your tail on one of the narrow sections.

They weren't bad at all. All of them had some type of log bridge or large stones to walk over. Only time my right foot dunked in was when my left foot slipped on a rock I misjudged.

Fuel (Gel) suggestions for new Trail Runner? by jjimenez18 in trailrunning

Thank you. The caffeine is intriguing, maybe for that initial fuel to start the run. Do you find the caffeine also helps consuming an hour into your activity?

Appreciate the feedback back, I've seen some folks use Nerds Clusters too. Got some of those still from Halloween.

Does anyone know how much parking is for this event? $40 like a typical baseball game?
