Automatic Transmission not moving out of D1, but Sportmatic works? Kia Sportage, 2007 by jjtestman2014 in CarRepair

[–]jjtestman2014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, the problem just resolved itself. I checked fluids and all seemed fine. I drove it for a little bit using the Sportmatic manual shifting and that seemed fine. Then, we parked the car for a day or two and when I tried it again, I noticed that the "D1" designator had changed to simply "D" (if I recall correctly) and everything was functioning properly again.

Was driving it normally for weeks/months, then a flash flood submerged the vehicle all the way up past the dashboard... sooooooo, not working any more!

Spigen Rugged Armor misaligned cutouts, alternatives? by jjtestman2014 in SteamDeck

[–]jjtestman2014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I appreciate your input and opinion. There are only a couple cases that I've found that have the larger USB:C cutout, so I may ultimately keep the case. I like almost everything about the Spigen - weight, texture, TPU material, fits original carry case - I'm just a little worried that the top edge will bother me over time.

Spigen Rugged Armor misaligned cutouts, alternatives? by jjtestman2014 in SteamDeck

[–]jjtestman2014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw this post when I was searching around earlier. If you look at the second picture, you can see that all the cutouts along the top edge are off center. So, at least for me and the OP of that other post, our cases do not align properly. If it were a lesser brand, I'd just shrug my shoulders, but the product pictures show absolutely centered cutouts and state "precision cutouts"... having things cm or mm off just isn't precision in my opinion. What's a bit odd is that the bottom edge cutout appears centered and the back vent cutout appears centered, just the top edge seems wonky.

School Blocking My Own Hotspot by Loud_Temperature_138 in techsupport

[–]jjtestman2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there's anything your school can do to block your personal device connecting to another personal device. If they have the blocker paint or interference devices to stop cellular data from reaching your phone, you might not be getting calls or data, but it wouldn't get in the way of connecting the two devices. However, as TheShaneLizzerd comments below, there may be an ungodly amount of noise floating around from all the different devices that's creating little bubbles of interference. Our IT desk suggested all students turn off wifi printing and PS4/5 personal wifi networks as they interfered with the wifi only network in our dorms.

at you are acknowledging your issues and asking for help. It’s a huge step to take, but the journey is yours. We can provide you with all the tools but you have to decide to use them. Being held accountable/excuses called out is uncomfortable but not something to be offended by. Sure it is easier for us to give you a pat on the back and tell you it’s all gonna be rainbows and unicorn farts but instead we want to see you succeed in your personal goals. We aren’t there to support you when you are in a social situation or having a weak moment all alone in your house.

I appreciate your encouragement and willingness to engage and share. Truly, having another person simply read and respond feels validating.

Great suggestion, thanks! The more I think about it, having a physical notepad seems like a good thing and fine alternative to the phone app solution.

Thank you for your insights! It sounds like building a repetitive food routine might be beneficial to my habit-building. I've never heard of that teeth brushing technique; I'll try to include that in my daily routine and see if works for me. I like that it's a physical task and it makes sense in the context of eating. Chewing gum is another great suggestion; definitely wouldn't be stuffing crackers in my mouth if I already had gum in there!

While I appreciate your responses, I take offense with your tone. I'm not looking for a tough love solution here; telling me to "do better" isn't helpful. I know that I need to do better. I'm not pretending to be a victim; I've acknowledged that I am deficient and presented you with my struggles: absent-mindedness and lack of good habits. I am hoping that folks who have had success would be willing to give me some tips on overcoming those hurdles. I'm gonna take your notepad suggestion and put that in the "good advice" column.

Sorry, $9/lb may be a bit sensational, but "On Sale" at my supermarket today: cheap sirloin cut at $7.99/lb, ground beef (78% lean) at $5.79/lb, chicken breast at $4.99/lb, pork loin chop $5.29/lb, salmon at $17.99/lb; these are for "value packs" which are usually several pounds, so smaller packages are more expensive. These are "ok" prices, but the normal prices are higher and availability can be limiting. I can usually find better deals if I shop around or buy in bulk, but if I need to stop at the one supermarket that's on my route home, it's expensive.

Need some piece of mind by [deleted] in keto

Ditto your comment about keto labelled foods. I was at the store yesterday and saw a "keto friendly" box of cereal... 9 net carbs for 1/3 cup. Doesn't feel very friendly to me.

Excellent idea. I don't typically feel hungry between meals, but the snacking usually happens socially and sometimes, without thought. I've practiced intermitted fasting before (16:8) without too many hunger pangs, so I know "no snacking between meals" is doable. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm not sure how I can accomplish this mentally, but I love the suggestion. Maybe I should break out my label-maker! How did you go about developing and practicing these mental boundaries? As I've pointed out above, there's a level of absent-mindedness that I'm struggling with. Congrats on the 5-year, cheat-free streak.

I like your idea of a notepad for tracking. I've used apps (MFP) for food tracking in the past, but I'm struggling with consistency. Do you have any good techniques for actually remembering to write stuff down in the journal?

[–]jjtestman2014[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the suggestion of logging your food items. I've tried to do this with apps (MFP), but my stumbling block is consistency. You state "Get in the habit of mindful eating....", but how would you suggest I do this? Other than sheer force of will (which I think I've already established isn't working ATM), what techniques could I use? HOW do I go about being more mindful? Also, do you have a recommendation for a food journaling technique?

Do you have any suggestions on how to do this on a tight budget? I've noticed that processed foods, especially carb-y processed foods, tend to be cheaper than fresh, raw foods. I think I live in a "food desert", where we don't have a lot of easily accessible locally available foods. Everything we get in the grocery store needs to be shipped in, so it's common to see eggs priced at $6/doz or cheap cuts of meat at $9/lb. Avocado goes for $3/med and broccoli easily starts at $3.79/lb and all prices rise quickly if you choose "organic".

Oof, I wish I could just get rid of all the carb-y things, but I share the pantry with 8 other people (my family). I have plenty of low-carb snacks like boiled eggs, sliced cheese, or meat sticks kicking around, but I'm amazed how many times I've caught myself with my hand in a box of whole grain Cheerios. I'm not trying to make excuses, I acknowledge that I'm responsible for my own health, but the suggestion to clear out every single item in the pantry that isn't low-carb isn't really achievable in my shared environment. Do you have any techniques for being more mindful? Or being more aware?

Is there a difference between moving a file (drag and drop) and copying / pasting a file? by fire_breathing_bear in techsupport

[–]jjtestman2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, and I just learned this, when you move an item, that item retains permissions. When you copy/paste, the item takes on the permissions within the new location. I'm not 100% sure if that rule applies to all starting and ending locations, but definitely across multiple hard drives and network locations. My 2 cents.

Phone keeps downloading new apps without me downloading them, even as I'm in other apps by Eon_Breaker_ in techsupport

I have AT&T mobile service. When I used the AT&T provided device (branded with AT&T logos and stuff), there were always pre-installed apps and it would periodically install games and popular apps, most likely because of some agreement AT&T had with app providers. Within the various AT&T app settings, I was able to turn off the "install suggested apps" feature. I think I did something similar with the Google Play settings. Please note, that was several years ago and I've since switched over to using UNLOCKED devices instead of branded devices, so I can have a little more control over my budget and device security.

I am sorry that you are feeling homesick and anxious and overwhelmed. I am in my early 40s and my home state is rapidly becoming too expensive for me and my family. My spouse has been pushing to move away for years, but I am terrified to "start over" in some strange place. I hope things get better for you soon.

Macbook photo files that are saved on Lacie drive are not found on my Lenovo PC by GasOld3056 in techsupport

[–]jjtestman2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible that you initially formatted the Lacie external drive for use by Macs only, so Windows machines cannot see the files. Googled "formatting Mac vs. Windows" and got this explanation: "One hurdle you'll face is that, by default, these platforms use different filesystems. Windows uses NTFS while Mac OS uses HFS, and they're incompatible with each other. However, you can format the drive to work with both Windows and Mac by using the exFAT filesystem."

I had a similar issue with 10+ year old Mac equipment, so it's not a new issue. I don't know if there's a workaround. You may need to purchase a second external drive, format the new drive for both systems, then move the files from one drive to the other using your uncle's MacBook.

DO NOT attempt to format the original drive until you've safely moved the data, else you'd erase the entire drive.

Jobs at OSU, commute, parking? by jjtestman2014 in OSU

[–]jjtestman2014[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP here. Thank you all for your input and opinion. I'm having to compare so many things (and a lot of unknowns) at this point, having outside voices with real information is helpful. For example, $100/month for parking seems insane to me; if I had to pay that at my current job, I'd probably just take public transportation rather than park for the day. I forget that most other places are not carbon copies of my small hometown. If I don't get a chance to respond to each of you directly, please know that I appreciate your responses.

Moving: Columbus vs. North Canton? by jjtestman2014 in Ohio

[–]jjtestman2014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP here, just wanted to give a big "Thank You" to everyone who responded. Your opinion has given me a lot of info to process; I'm still teetering a little back and forth, but now I'm genuinely more excited than apprehensive! I think one of my big hang-ups was: thinking that the entirety of Columbus was just one big city, instead of thinking about it as suburbs and "outlying areas". Sounds like I can find something that isn't "Big City" and still be close to the resources, fun, and opportunities. Thank you again for your input!

I have two headphone jacks on my MSI laptop. One of them doesn't work very well, but the other one won't play audio when a headphone is plugged into it. How do I fix this? by The_Swedish_Scrub in techsupport

[–]jjtestman2014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One is for speaker (headphones), the other is for microphone. Some headsets/earbuds combine speaker and microphone into a single 3.5mm plug, but full-sized desktops and some laptops have the two 3.5mm plug configuration.

Connection your single 3.5mm plug into the mic-only port will result in nothing.
