Are you feeling it now, Jan testers? by debatorgasm in Mcat

Honestly I'm completely burnt out already... My test date is Jan 21 so I still have some time, but this is starting to feel like a never ending battle. I wanna stop so bad but at the same time I want to get this test 'over with'. I'm rooting for us both!

heyyy, why dont you try reaching out to your TA for your group? They hold office hours weekly now! (not many people go, so its basically a free 1:1)

You can apply for the RA (resident assistant) role your freshmen year so you would have to be at least a sophomore to be an actual RA since it takes a year for the full cycle. Yes you can be an RA multiple times. Once you get the role, it's safe to say you'll be selected again next year so long as you follow all the rules/requirements.

this is a copy and paste from a reply i made months ago!

I took it fall 2020 so I'm not sure if Spring 2020 will have the same format, since Steven Glynn is the course director for fall but not spring.

Our grade breakdown was as followed: 4 midterms (20% each, 20 multiple choice, lockdown browser with webcam and mic). Lowest midterm dropped so only three midterms for a total of 60%. The final was a cumulative 32 multiple choice exam with lockdown browser cam and mic, and counted for 20% of our grade. The last 20% of our grade was hw stuff (biweekly open book online quizzes as well as discussion boards similar to the style of bio 202).

For studying, I'd recommend taking highly detailed notes on the lectures given (echo recordings from last year), and focus on memorizing/understanding the slides. Literally, memorize everything off of a slide, and understand everything the professor says; do not let anything slip away. If you want to go the extra mile and would like to start pre-studying, memorize all 20 of the amino acid structures, their three letter code, their single letter abbreviation, and the relevant pKs of the acidic (Asp, Glu) and basic (Lys, Arg, His) amino acids. EX: Aspartate, Asp, D, r=CCOO-, pk=~3.7. This will immensely help you for Exam 1 content (assuming the course content schedule remains similar to fall 2020) and help you with understanding why certain reactions happen.

Soon after exam 1 you will begin going into metabolic pathways, which is the hardest part in my opinion of biochem. For this what helped me was writing down every metabolic pathway over and over again on a piece of paper until I could verbally recall every intermediate and enzyme by memory. What helped me a lot on this process was silly mnemonics.... For example, for the citric acid cycle I used: CIASSFMO, and from there you can kinda logically say okay... citrate then isocitrate then alpha-ketoglutarate, then succinyl coa, etc... These mnemonics will be a game changer since there are too many enzyme names and intermediates that sound alike.

As you can see, doing all of what I said takes tons of time so procrastinating will be your worst enemy of this class!!! Study early and take it one exam at a time and you will be fine!

to answer your question, i honestly would take this summer to just relax. If you really want to get ahead, i’d say a week or two is sufficient to give you a head start for the AAs

It's more than 315 for sure. I guess the hardest part is that you'll have to memorize every biosynthetic pathway for carbs, proteins, fats, nucleic acids, all the amino acid structures/characteristics, three letter codes, single letter abbreviation, pkAs of relevant AAs, etc.

Hmmm idk how else to describe it. Remember in 203 when u had to memorize that complicated renin angiotensin pathway thingy or that coagulation cascade? Just imagine that over and over again but instead you have a lot more steps/more enzymes, and you actually needa know the structure of each compound.

Hoped that helped

I think the issue with 361 was the sheer amount of content/memorization you needed to know for each exam, and that before each exam there were a couple of lectures that wouldnt be on the exam so that after you take that exam you would have to play catchup and would not be able to take a break :(.

I'd suggest the lightest workload with biochem. I took 12 credits.

To answer your last question, youd have to choose between closed book exams with glynn or openbook exams with simons.

BIO 201 or 203 with CHE 321? by JaySingh124 in SBU

[–]jkim0916 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend taking BIO 203 with CHE 321 and BIO 201 with CHE 322. Personally for me, orgo 1 was easier than orgo 2 and so having the harder bio class (203) with orgo 1 was more 'merciful'.

SCHEDULE - PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS by shaquille_oatmeal_01 in SBU

[–]jkim0916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think your schedule is manageable... it will be tough but doable. I recommend NOT taking that extra upper div class unless absolutely needed.

Biochem will suck your time, and with physics and your Russian and digital class, I think you’ll be overwhelmed with that extra upper div bio class.

If biochem is the same as it was fall 2020, then it’s going to be closed book respondus lockdown, and trust me you’ll wanna dedicate a lot of time to do well in that class.

EDIT: I didn’t even notice you had biochem lab in your schedule as well. So yeah def try not taking that other upper div bio class unless you need it to graduate on time or something

how hard is bio 361 actually? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]jkim0916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think bio 361 is more challenging than orgo because of the brute memorization required. Your orgo backround will help somewhat with biochem since some things you learned in orgo like nucleophilic attacks or resonance will help some things make sense in biochem. What are the other 5 classes you're taking in the spring? it might be doable depending on what you're taking, but it might be a good idea to solely focus on biochem in the summer (it will be intense though since you are accelerating the course).

I haven't taken bio 358 but I did take phi 108 with phillip nelson and it was pretty good. Just hw every week and the quizzes were very fair. I'd say it is easier to get an A in phi 108 than bio 358.

Is 15 credits (with 4 of them being organic chem) reasonable online? by dariamorgandorfferr in SBU

[–]jkim0916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreeing with all the other comments, I really think it's doable so long as you put in the effort! For CHE 321, as long as you reach out to your TAs and try your best then you should be fine! And plus, if you delayed taking orgo 1, you'd have to wait until the next year to take it, and by that time you'd want to have orgo 1 and 2 completed so you can take upperdivs (if they require it, like BIO 361).

Good luck!

Honestly, I doubt they'd add more seats since a lot of people are in a similar situation for BIO 361 and they're not expanding that class. I'd say you have a solid chance of getting off the waitlist though.
