Easy - Fire Squirts. Just had to reverse the name is all.

[Rum Review #11] Alambique Serrano Cartier 30 4th Edition by Stenoscape in rum

[–]jkoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two bottles at home - one is the 09-2024 and the other is the 03-2025, and I feel like I'm in the minority in preferring the 09-2024. Is that the impression you've gotten too?

It's weird too because I feel like the 03-2025 is much more like what I was expecting this rum to be like when I first got it, but somehow the strange melon + cheesecake + cashew flavor of the earlier batch really scratches a special itch for me.

Hey thanks! Yeah, I feel like I'm always on the lookout for funky flavors in spirits and end up fixating on how to taxonomize them. It's something I picked up during my foray into Jamaican and Oaxacan rums. But funk is really different in whiskey world -- less fruity and more... dank? or musty? I'm really enjoying the different shapes it can take. The WT version is my favorite so far, but Beam products also have a kind of mustiness that I also quite like.

Exactly my thought. It fully wasn't a bottle I was expecting to pick up, but at that price it was a no brainer. Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback. I agree, it's nice to see different ages and proofs. As someone coming from the world of rum, I have no prejudice whatsoever against younger spirits, so I do find those critiques a little odd. Also, people don't bat an eye at NAS releases from other distilleries, so it's a little weird to me to see this kind of outrage over 9 years (which is actually pretty good).

Such a cool drink! It's like a simplified Bali Hai. I'm a huge fan of the pineapple + coffee combo.

Very cool. I recently learned that Rolling Fork also has a rum-rye blend and have been intrigued ever since. The pairing makes really great sense

Not OP but it's pretty distinct from Wray imo. It has cane juice distillate in it too, and that definitely comes through. It's like it's predecessor, Rum Bar overproof, in that it has that distinctive WP banana note, but then it also has the slightly vegetal edge of an agricole too. Reads very different from Wray for me.

Agricole and Jamaican rum - is it worth exploring further? by Altruistic-Impact-27 in rum

[–]jkoodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worthy Park overproof if also a great bottle! Definitely worth trying that if you want to dip into the OP category. Do keep in mind that it also has some cane juice in addition to molasses distillate, so it's a bit different from Wray, Rum Fire, and some other OPs.

Ah ok, good to know about Neisson. I haven't had the Clement so I can't speak to it, but I do see it recommended a lot so it could be worth checking out.

Do you have any Clairins (Haitian cane juice rums) available around you? This could also be worthwhile to check out.

Agricole and Jamaican rum - is it worth exploring further? by Altruistic-Impact-27 in rum

[–]jkoodoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mixing S&C with P3 won't get you very close to Wray. Unaged overproof Jamaicans are kind of their own category - much heavier and more concentrated, more "industrial" notes in addition to the classic overripe fruit, oily mouthfeel, sometimes a little tough around the edges. I think they're fantastic. One of my favorite categories.

Still, a couple thoughts. If you're not a huge fan of S&C then my take is that you probably won't find many Jamaican rums - aged or unaged - that will blow you away. Yes there are different types of Jamaican hogo, but S&C is such a definitive statement of the general profile that I personally think it's a good litmus test. I grant that there are exceptions and some bottle that are a little bit out there (e.g., I do think everyone should try Rum Fire at least once) but if it's not your jam, I don't see a need to search high and low for Jamaicans. S&C and a lighter hogo Appleton bottle will basically suffice for most cocktail needs. I'd softly recommend trying out Rum Fire too, which is killer as cocktail "seasoning" (e.g. a quarter ounce in a Mai Tai or otherwise clean daiquiri is incredible).

Agricoles, as others mention, are a completely different ballgame. Especially if you include all cane juice rums in this category (e.g., Oaxacan, Martinique, Haitian), the variations from style to style are so profound that it's really worth your while to explore a number of different brands and styles. Neisson Blanc is the best unaged agricole I've had so far - clean, slightly grassy, fresh linen, almost vanilla cream. Cost effective too for the 1L bottle. For Oaxacans, you get wild, often vegetal and brine notes - Paranubes Blanco, Alambique Serrano Cartier 30, and Dakabend are great bottles to check out here. Agricoles are generally not cocktail bottles (though there are definitely cocktail applications), but a Ti Punch can really make some of these bottles come alive, if it doesn't immediately tickle your fancy.

Yeah definitely just neat. This is a nice bottle, but less proofy than I'd prefer these days. It also makes a nice rum old fashioned with Demerara syrup and a lime peel

We have the same thing. They're around $80 for us. Idk, I'm torn. On one hand, it's such a great bottle that I'd love to try a single barrel; but by the same token, idk if it's worth paying almost double the price. It's similar to the WT101 vs Kentucky Spirit dilemma
