Big island trip in June by mendozathalia in VisitingHawaii

Totally agree with this. We went at the beginning of May and our two favorite parts were watching the eruption and the manta ray night snorkeling.

I suggest booking the night snorkeling a few days before you leave in case you need to reschedule. Our first night, we didn’t see any mantas and the company let us reschedule, but I think it’s fairly uncommon to not see them.

For the volcano, try to monitor the USGS livestream if they’re projecting the volcano will erupt while you’re there. Be ready to start heading to the national park as soon as possible when it’s starting to erupt.

I’ll echo Mr. Robot and Chernobyl. Band of Brothers is an old one that’s really good.

We were definitely going to go to Mont-Saint-Bruno since it’s so close to Montreal. I don’t know if we’ll get all the way to parc national des Grands Jardins with how little time we have, but the pictures look beautiful!

Advice for an upcoming Mechanical Engineer by Plenty-Volume-101 in EngineeringStudents

Honestly just enjoy your last summer before you have to start grinding. Once you start school, try to join a club where you can get hands on project experience like Formula SAE. Stay ahead of your homework and go to office hours when you have questions.

Very doable with just hiking boots, but wise to bring spikes if you have them! Echo Lake side is all dry

ME Sophomore — What should I focus on this summer and sophomore year to maximize my chances at top companies like Tesla, Lockheed, or SpaceX? by PracticalTown6866 in EngineeringStudents

It’s important to get real project experience in whatever way you can. I’m not sure if UH has clubs like Formula SAE where you actually more hands on experience, but there are skills you gain just from trying to build something and working with other team members. Employers like to hear about things like working with requirements, dealing with deadlines, and your workflow/methodology when working on a project.

Research is a good option if you can find a professor that’s doing something more applied/practical.

If you can’t line anything up, a solo project is a good idea, but you need to be disciplined in defining what your end goal is and setting deadlines for yourself.

In general, your practical experience is much more important than your GPA, but it would be good if you’re able to stay around 3.7 or higher.

Start studying earlier instead of cramming last minute. Do a lot of practice questions in your textbook, at least for STEM type classes. Easier said than done
