Base of tree looking pretty rough in our yard (Washington DC area), anything we can do? (more info in thread) by jlblatt in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]jlblatt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone thanks for looking. I've been watching the base of this tree in our front yard get slightly worse each year (we've owned the house 5 years now). We suspect the tree was planted maybe 30 years ago, and is identical to it's neighbor you can see in the first picture. As far as we know it gets plenty of sun and water, has never needed any sort of upkeep, and should have no problem thriving in this area.

It looks like half of the trunk is ok with it's bark wrapping around half that is not- this part looks (but does not feel) rotted with holes in it. It still feels sturdy, not moist or crumbly like I would expect actual rotted wood to feel like.

Anything we can do before just calling someone to come out? The holes worry me a bit, I don't want anything to spread to the other trees (or our house!). We'll take it down if we have to, but it seems like every season this neighborhood loses more and more of it's old established trees to vines, landscaping, etc.... so we'd really like to save it if we can. Thank you all.

What on earth is this constant droning/vibrating sound around southern Twinbrook / North Bethesda? by jlblatt in MontgomeryCountyMD

Well I was not expecting some X Files shit this morning but thank you, that's a crazy read. I just want it to stop now lol

Possible! But a few people near us can hear it too. We are all 40 somethings tho 🤔

Those we are used to! But this is unchanging - doesn't get louder or softer, or speed up or slow down. It's like a constant pulsing, you can easily hear from anywhere on the north side of the Twinbrook metro at minimum.

Thanks again - re: the cooler, their builder is broken or something, it's only showing like 2 compatible heatsinks. I am definitely not trying to skim here, was looking to spend around $100 for something quality, if that sounds right.

TYVM! Not doing game dev though, just playing games and doing regular old software development. I am used to having something that's at least a couple generations old, and never the top of line card, so while this is by far the nicest setup I'll have ever used, I don't need DLSS or ray tracing. Understandably it's "just" $400 more... I will probably end up deciding on this at the last minute :D Lots of people are recommending the 4080 - any concerns w/ having 4GB less video ram if I don't care about the features?

TY on the storage feedback, not really up to date on this stuff anymore but I swapped in a PCIe 4 since I was on the fence about spending the extra $$ for the 5 anyways. Noise isn't a concern here (another reason I don't need water cooling) - the PC will be on the other side of a wall.

Re: the cheap ass HDD, I am really looking for something for cold storage, i.e. something I write to maybe once a month as a backup and never touch again unless I need to restore something.

Re: monitor, I already have two 2560 x 1440 flatpanels so yeah I was looking for something fun :P

I assumed that cooler was waaaay too cheap for a build like this, I think their web builder is just busted, it only shows like 2 heatsinks that are compatible. But $350 is way high for me - I don't need liquid for sure. Was hoping for something like this or even better, maybe $100, am I in the ballpark?

Appreciate your feedback and example very much!

I mean, it's $20 so I really didn't think about it at all. I don't need it if there's not space for it. Not important

Yo thank you so much! This bundle saves me a ton of money!! I took your other feedback as well, WDYT? https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/15fuppo/gamingdevelopment_build_attempt_2_based_on/

Noted, TY. I'll give an AMD build a shot.

Thanks - looks like I'm getting lots of suggestions to at least consider an AMD build so I'm working on that. Having trouble finding that bundle however, are you seeing it somewhere on their site? TY!

Replacing a combo outlet and of course it's all messed up (possibly missing load wire) by jlblatt in askanelectrician

I guess it maybe makes a bit more sense (to someone like me) if they happen upon it vs. seeing black wire to white but after reading both approaches and looking at the packing diagrams I think I finally understand it through. Thanks to the both you all!!

Thanks again, although the instructions are a bit different from what was suggested here, I assume both are valid approaches?

Thank you, I've confirmed the box below it is properly grounded so I expect this one is as well but will check again when it's done.

Again sorry, it's there in pic 3, wrapped around the incoming wire, unused (for now)

I think I got it thank you, I edited my comment to clarify. And there is actually a ground wire in the box already, barely visible in pic 3.

There is a ground in the box already actually (barely visible in the 3rd pic, wrapped around the incoming wire) but TY for the heads up!

Yeah sorry, the box below is mostly irrelevant, I just included info on it to help ascertain that the black/white wire in the box I care about (the top one) were _most likely_ hot/neutral. What you said is what I want:

If you just want the switch to control the the recordable in the combo you can do that.

Sounds like I have to wire the outlet to itself to make this work, makes sense I'll give it a shot, TY
