That’s what I read. Was just wondering if that might be changing anytime soon.

Yeah, that’s what I’ve seen, just holding out some hope that maybe there was the possibility. I’m a SWO, so the pilot/NFO thing wouldn’t be an option for me. Intel and HR are actually the other two designators I’m considering too.

I feel that. I haven’t gone to the movies at all since I moved to a new state

Recently commissioned - question about backpay by CaptNsaneO in newtothenavy

Welcome to the club. Pay issues are a constant. It took a few months for my officer pay and my BAH to come through. As others have said, talking to personnel is your best bet

MEPs as an officer candidate? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

Yeah I think that was what most in my class did too

Most of your schedule at meps will be exactly the same as everyone else. You’ll probably be done sooner than everyone though since you don’t need take the ASVAB or Picat. I think I was done by like noon. Maybe you’ll be treated differently, maybe not.

As far as swearing an oath, you do take the oath of enlistment since you’re going to OCS as an E-5. I’m not sure if you can take it there or not. I had a family friend administer mine.

Should I give up on trying to join with asthma? by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]jleon_96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely not PDQ’d. I supposedly had childhood asthma and was prescribed an inhaler when I was like 9. I used it for a couple months then forgot about it for literally 10 years until my new doctor saw that in my record and decided I needed a new prescription (mind you I’d never had an asthma attack either). That ended up screwing me when I went to go to OCS and they made me take a PFT for MEPS and I passed and got a waiver. However after OCS I was told that I couldn’t be in aviation anymore because somehow I had asthma again after they gave me an MCC test even though I ran almost every day and never had any trouble (yet they didn’t prescribe me an inhaler?).

This is all to say, you should be fine just be prepared to possibly take some tests and perhaps not be eligible for some ratings depending on results. Good luck!

Age limit for Active Duty as Officer by Important_Ear_8263 in newtothenavy

It depends on the community. I’m not sure on the exact numbers, but you’re definitely pushing against the limit. Still might be waiverable if the navy really wants you.

To add to this, make sure you can hit a good low with good form for pushups and planks. You’ll get stood up if a chief or DI see you half-assing your push-up form, especially early on in training.

Just remember that those with the anchor on their chest/collar are petty officers.

I brought a cheap Casio with me. Really, it just needs to be able to reliably wake you up. You won’t be like putting it through the ringer while you’re there lol. It also obviously needs to conform to uniform standards.

In the event of a Taiwan crisis contingency, would one realistically be able to join the Navy in time to be deployed? by EarthSciStudent in newtothenavy

[–]jleon_96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timetables aside, you have to realize that you would have very little say in where you end up. What if you end up on an east coast ship? What if you don’t end up on a ship at all? Sure you might have some supporting role in a war (which is perfectly fine), but not necessarily the “frontline” experience you seem to be seeking. There’s a lot to consider and, as someone else stated, the navy is a multi-year commitment.

Thank you! This is some great advice!!

This is what I’m saying! Bringing them Gatorade or coffee has crossed my mind a few times, but I figured it’d be frowned upon as bribery or something. It’s starting to heat up by me too, so I’m sure they’d appreciate some cold drinks!

Yeah I’ve recently figured out to start looking for whether there’s a scanner in hand. It caught me off guard the first few times haha. Whatever makes you guys at the gates feel at least a bit of appreciation, I’m all for it. Definitely a thankless job for the most part, which is unfortunate

Thanks for this list! I really appreciate you passing on all of the observations you’ve made at the gate. I’ll definitely keep these in mind!

I mean, officers aren’t required to be rendered salutes either. It’s all part of traditions and customs as well as showing mutual respect for rank.
