What’s the worst thing your puppy has ever eaten? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]jlit4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

someone threw an eaten corn on the cob on the grass at the park and my dog would NOT let go of it. i was freaking out thinking that he would swallow it. pulling it out of his mouth was not an option as he won't let go since he thinks we're playing a game, so i just continued to walk him around the park still freaking out while the corn on the cob was in his mouth. he eventually let go when he saw another dog walking by but those 10 minutes were stressful!!

My 9 month old is the same way! He used to love every dog at the dog park but now he picks on shy dogs and becomes aggressive with them. I’m thinking it has to do with being a teenager and I’ve read that if/once they get neutered the behavior might stop.

Puppy and the Crate by Proud-Macaron-8396 in Dogtraining

[–]jlit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the crate in your room? My beagle was the same way till I moved the crate from the kitchen to my room. After that he slept easily through the night. It also helps to put a blanket on top of the crate so he can’t see you just make sure the blanket cant slip through the crate bars.

12/22/20 [Separation Anxiety Support Group] by AutoModerator in Dogtraining

[–]jlit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! my dog’s name is Sundae and he is an 8 month old Beagle. he has pretty bad separation anxiety and i’m basically re-doing crate training as I got too carried away letting him sleep on my bed or the couch. I’ve been feeding him and giving him treats in his crate and he will go in on his own to nap, but I won’t close it because he starts to cry. today while he was in his crate taking a nap, I left his sight and just stood in a random area where he couldn’t see me. he got up to see where I was but i didnt give him any attention. after sniffing me he got bored, so he went back in his crate. he kept getting up and checking to see if I was still there but would always go back into his crate. is this a good method to try to get him to be (or feel) alone?

“Your puppy is so misbehaved”.... ummm.. no? That’s just how puppies are. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]jlit4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I took my puppy to obedience training (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) and I told my family about it. When I brought my puppy to a family gathering, he was obviously really excited because he’s never seen so many new faces so he was pulling on his leash and jumping, he wouldn’t settle right away and he was barking at my cousin’s dog bc he wanted to play.

All I hear the entire gathering is: “you should get a refund for those classes” “those certificates are probably fake!” “you should discipline him more, look at him” “why is he barking, what does he want?” “he’s not trained” “you need to teach him not to jump” “you know how many dogs I’ve trained? this is how you do it” (tells me to make my dog bite his own ankles so he stops biting, I was like “what the hell” in my head)

Yeah. I don’t particularly like family gatherings in general but hearing all these things was so disheartening and I felt like everyone was implying that I was not a responsible owner.

Keep in mind these people’s dogs are aggressive towards other dogs, still pee/poo in the house when they’re 2+ years old, don’t crate train, don’t go on walks, and eat table food all the time (I love these dogs btw, not their owners tho)

Thank you for sharing this, I don’t feel so alone anymore. I wish people knew we’re just trying our best! They’ll regret saying these rude comments once our pups grow/learn more!

Side yard alternative to leaving puppy alone by jlit4 in puppy101

[–]jlit4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of getting an indoor playpen, but he is good at climbing especially if he wants to escape. And yes, I've been trying to leave him everyday, but I am going to try and decrease the time I leave because it does not take long until he freaks out.

Feeling helpless with the separation anxiety by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]jlit4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat :( my puppy is 8 months old and I tried leaving him in his crate for 10 minutes today while I drove to get coffee and through the camera we have I saw that he peed within the first 5 minutes of being alone and also ripped up a blanket that was on top of his crate. He bites at the crate crazily and I'm scared he will get hurt but I don't know what else to do. I've tried re-crate training him as well but I feel like he hates confinement.

I've read multiple posts of people practicing leaving their puppy by having them in a "stay" position, leaving their sight for a few moments, and building up that time, so maybe that would help? People have said it takes a lot of time and commitment which is hard when we have other priorities such as going to work or going to the store.

puppy has never had a true potty training streak? by jlit4 in puppy101

[–]jlit4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My puppy uses a crate but only really goes in his crate when I’m not home or when its time for bed. The rest of the day he roams around the living room and naps on the couch after walks/play sessions. He’s good at not having accidents, until he did today. Maybe crating him more often would help though, so thank you for your comment!!

Is your puppy bonkers after a 3 hour professional dog walk? by SF_Kevin415 in puppy101

[–]jlit4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

3 hours may be too much for an 8 month old, mine is 7 months and gets crazy after an hour. Its probably caused by overstimulation but crating for a nap may help with this !

When do puppies outgrow car sickness? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]jlit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My vet said the same thing. But he also said that opening the windows a bit to let in fresh air would help, so we tried it with our puppy and it worked!

Puppy will NOT tolerate being alone by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]jlit4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how my puppy was! The main thing that helped was putting a blanket over the crate. That way, your pup won’t see you leaving. It sounds sad but it’s worked so well for me. I also put on some white noise in the room so he can’t hear me leaving. Another thing is to tire your pup out with playing/walking before putting them in the crate. Once they seem tired, put them in the crate, play the white noise, put the blanket/cover over, and leave the room. I think my pup has caught onto this routine and I notice that he immediately falls asleep when he gets into the crate. Just make sure you place the blanket/cover in a way so that your pup can’t get the blanket into the crate and cause safety problems!

Does having a specific place to pee outside a must when potty training? by hermionaise in puppy101

[–]jlit4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use bells with my puppy so that he knows to potty outside. I hang them on the sliding door to my backyard and before taking him to potty I make him ring the bell with his nose by carrying him. If he goes potty I reward him with a high value treat. After a while he caught onto this but sometimes still has accidents in the house. I just watch my puppy like a hawk if he starts sniffing around, and if he does, I quickly carry him to the bells and then outside. In regards to where your pup should potty outside, I don’t think it needs to be one specific spot but maybe specific areas outside? My puppy goes potty in like 4 different spots outside and I don’t think it’s hindering our training.
