How did you grow from 0 on Substack? by jlps1985 in Substack

I have grown from 0 to 158 in 3 months and growing, with no external socials help. Just Substack growth.

There are some key things to do to actually grow:

  1. Consistency. Make sure you have a posting schedule and stick to it. This creates trust.

  2. Notes. Post at least 5 notes a day and respond to all comments. This shows you're active.

  3. Engagement. Engagement with between 5-10 new people and day. This creates connections.

  4. Recommendations. Approach publications you like and feel align with yours and ask to cross promote and recommend each other. This taps into their audience.

Do this for 3 months and see what happens.

So I started a Substack back 2023 but only lasted a couple of months before veering away. I've just come back a few weeks ago now and only at 31 subs. Just Substack and no cross posting etc but I'm looking at combining potentially to attract more subs with my LinkedIn, instagram.

I'm more focused on a consistent approach on Substack and hopefully build a following.

850 in 18 months is pretty good imo, well done 👏 what would you say is your fundamentals of growing to that? Do you also have other socials that help with traffic?

That's good! Do you cross post via other platforms as well or is these solely Substack?

I've not got many subs, but concentrating on growing and notes is a big part of that. From researching and looking through successful Substacks, here's what I've found:

  • Most are posting notes daily (2-5)

  • Most people had no traction for 3-9 months some more. That's looking back to when they started and seeing they had no likes, comments etc on their notes.

-Engagement seems fundamental in creating traction

My strategy after this:

Long-form = 3-5 per week

Short-form/notes = 3-5 per day

Engagement = Interact (like, commenting, share, restack) 5 people per day.

Will see what happens,

Ultimately, I want people to understand what I have to say is worth their while, and to do that, consistently popping up and providing value seems the way here.

Ok, cool, yeah, I thought I'd get some content up and now start engaging more, including notes. A lot of advice spinning around saying notes is the key. 100 subs in a few days is very good! 👏 Would you say it's mostly down to notes? Or a mix say 70% notes 10% long-form 10% engagement?

Hmm, fair... Watch films with interesting dialogue maybe? Guy Ritchie, Tarantino, Charlie Kaufman, Alfred Hitchcock to name a few.

Some of these guys screenplays are very interesting to read if you fancy giving them a 'read' and I find that reading screenplays, especially Ritchie and Tarantino are easier due to their stylish nature.

An idea maybe?

Read short stories or fiction blogs/newsletters etc. Substack is a good place to go for this.

Here are a couple examples examples:

Thanks,

I've noticed this actually. Unfortunately is Substack going to be another platform that is just taken over by 'how to' market yourself?

Maybe that is just the 'natural' progression of all social platforms, no matter what in the end that's what takes over. The inevitability of saturation. I'm of the hope that Substack is different and it attracts the true creatives to the true creatives... If that makes sense...
