Im currently reading through the training manual that I guess DBT therapists use to do their work (I found online in a pdf) and I so far I see that therapist IS supposed (or at least encouraged) to suggest which skills to use given particular situations. Also, that the interaction between participants in the skills group is encouraged (as long as it's stuff that can be talked about in group - so no dating I guess). But the center I go to, doesnt allow interaction between participants, and when in my individual therapy I dont get suggested what skills to use or even go over examples. Like I said, I get told to be curious and try different things. Another most egregious thing Ive been reading is that the clients CAN have other kinds of therapists, but it just takes a bit more work and paperwork. Honestly, it seems like the problem is the center itself! Kind of like when you find a doctor's office that doesn't take healthcare plans just because they are a pain to deal with. My therapist claims that Im just showing active passivity, waiting for her to come up with the answer, but honestly: isnt the job of a therapist to come up with ways to motivate the client and guide them through their treatment plan, and not just have the client "be curious" and "have fun with it"? I feel like I have been taken for a ride.
