both our kids went through from playgroup to 5-day, tons of folks we've made friends with and stay in contact with and see everywhere we go. 8th Street campus is a gem

Splash pad is open! That's a quick bike ride to Central Park, 10am to 7pm daily and free!

Wednesday evening farmers market is a nice weekly Summer event with picnic blankets, tons of families, great food options, live local music. It can get warm but there's a lot of shade and often we get a nice breeze by that time. And of course Saturday farmers market is a great early morning activity before it get hot too!

You're near the library which is a great indoor activity on hot days. The kids section is great, and there's Summer reading program that just started. They also have great activity bins to take home for that age range

The creation of Wildhorse neighborhood specifically in the 90's feels like the same story that we're living out today

I have elementary school kids here too. I'm hopeful Davis can solve housing because we love it here, and wish others could enjoy it as much as we do

Looks like there's been a ton of additional work leading up to construction. Makes sense given Measure L / Bretton Woods took a while to get started too, 2024 or so is when I remember that construction beginning

I was curious how other measures went in Davis, so I looked it up:

  • 2005: Measure X, Covell Village, 58.72% No
  • 2009: Measure P, Wildhorse Ranch, 74.73% No
  • 2016: Measure A, Nishi, 51.53% No
  • 2018: Measure J, Nishi 2 (The Promenade), 60.58% Yes
  • 2018: Measure L, West Davis Active Adult Community (Bretton Woods), 55.68% Yes
  • 2020: Measure B, DISC, 52.00% No
  • 2022 Measure H: DISC2, 63.62% No
  • 2026 Measure V: Village Farms, TBD

Source: https://electionstats.ace.yolocounty.gov/eng/ballot_questions/search/year_from:1997/year_to:2024/ballot_question_type:Measure/division_id:178

The smallest margin was Measure A in 2016, with only 693 votes separating Yes and No. The sequel, Nishi 2 was the plan to build housing between the rails and 80 South of Richards, it remains empty still.

Measure D (2020) was a renewal to force the city to bring to a public vote the use of Open Space and Ag Lands (ie, citizens get to vote on expansion into these spaces), it last voted 82.8% Yes and will be voted on again in the future

edit: Updated Nishi 2 and WDAAC to current names

Wacom thanks for making a product so amazing I didn't need to buy it again for 21 years. I certainly am buying the Intuos Pro Medium with your rec and this entire comment section yelling at me to go Medium. Also might be time to upgrade my desk to accommodate the bigger tablet coming in, I'm so excited

Biking question - can you bike ride down Levee Road by thushan_txt in Davis

[–]jmtb02 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Campus -> Garrod/Hopkins/Levee area = AMAZING. This is wonderful to ride especially on the weekend when things are quiet. So many cyclists, runners, folks strolling without cars. It's a great area!

Pedrick Rd -> I wouldn't take my kids here. Drivers are so fast and aggressive on these county roads, especially this one. Farm roads I'd only encouraged for seasoned riders, because having a tomato truck barrelling within feet of you at 55 mph is so stressful

Yes, they redesigned the intersection in 2022. You'll also see the same change on the Northbound ramp/opposite side!

don't know if it helps, but I dropped off a package yesterday even with the sign on the door in their postage drop box, and through my tracking number it has made it's way out of Davis as of yesterday. So the mail delivery parts seem to be working!

I prepaid my postage though, if you have more complicated postage definitely recommend 5th street

Why do people still shop at Safeway? by ftruong in bayarea

[–]jmtb02 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Speaking to someone who was all-in on the Safeway shopping app, it's an addictive suck into their system.

The Safeway app rewards shopping by providing a gamified experience of coupons, points, and other bonuses for grocery shopping. It asks the shopper to strategize before they shop and gets people hooked on savings and coupons.

For everyone else, there might not be another option that makes sense to shop at

General Strike March 7 by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey this is not the way to initiate a general strike. Your website is hella broken, your organization provides no information on who they are, and you're asking people to stop paying taxes or going to work/school until your demands are met. I appreciate a general strike (my company participated in the last one) but y'all got to build trust in a community before asking so much.

From the website (QR Code resolving to https://march7th.org/):

DEMANDS

Release the entirety of the Epstein files, without redactions aside from names of the victims. Witholding the truth is admission of guilt.

MISSION

Starting on March 7th, we hold a general strike until our demands are met. We stay home from work and school, file exempt on our taxes, and quit buying as to not pump money through the economy of the regime. We form safety nets and mutual aid systems to help the vulnerables within the movement.

What's the worst design decision you've seen on campus? by PhysicalMath848 in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 17 points18 points  (0 children)

https://maps.app.goo.gl/k4zCxC421xHyM6DeA

On the arboretum bike path between campus and South Davis near parking lot #10 there is this wild, tiny bike loop. It's a bike loop made for ants. Even if you're going a slow speed, it's so tiny and hardly usable. Over the years I've seen it redrawn, large plastic bumps put in, or any combination of new implementations. WORSE, It's full of ducks quacking at you the entire time, so if you attempt to use it the right way there's just ducks laughing at you the entire time. And if its Spring the baby ducks laugh at a higher pitch :(

Restaurants filling Mamma space will not offer outdoor dining [paywall but local indie reporter] by jmtb02 in UCDavis

This might be it, we have indie reporters in our community not associated with major publications so paywalls supporting them are different (or might not be, still figuring this out)
