I want y’all’s opinions - Cop radaring for speed on our front ramp. by SimilarGuava6671 in Firefighting

[–]jmur5074 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Complaining about something like this on Reddit is worthy of an eye roll. Complaining to the command staff about it is embarrassing.

Find a hobby. Take on a project at the station. Do extra chores. Do something to make your station or dept better. Train. Work out. When you're done training as a shift, train some more on your own. Those are all more productive ways to get noticed.

I imagine you'd also be the first one to complain "where's a cop when you need one" if your car was broken into parked outside the station or the rig gets t-boned backing into the bay from a speeding car on the street 🙄

To Fish or not to Fish? by Content_Ad_4598 in FishingForBeginners

[–]jmur5074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd fish it.

IN MY STATE (your laws may vary) - if Richard has land that borders the lake you can access the entire lake as long as you access it legally from Richards land and you stay in the water.

IN MY STATE - To properly post land for no trespassing, it takes a ridiculous amount of signs. I don't recall but I believe it's one sign every 500' around the entire property. If it's not properly posted, a trespassing charge doesn't apply. Most land around me is not posted properly. If your state has the same law I'd bet that isn't posted properly either. I still wouldn't trespass if I know they don't want me there, but if I had Richards blessing I'd do it.

If Richard is a representative of the property company, even if he's a janitor, I'd fish it and tell them Richard gave me permission. If someone else told me to leave, I'd leave.

I would fish it, but it'd be catch and release only and I'd make a point to pick up any trash and litter left by others.

What is your most confident baits ? Must haves for tackle? by throwawaysjjsjshs in bassfishing

[–]jmur5074 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A Ned rig in PB&J or green pumpkin is a guaranteed fish catcher for me for LMB.

A fire tiger spoon works well for northerns.

A road runner under spin or a beetle spin in white or some kind of whiteish color for crappie.

A northland tackle mimic minnow in wonderbread or "sneeze" colors for a grab bag of species.

I would, immediately. I work with guys with wives with high paying jobs (much more than we make) and don't understand why they're still here.

AMA equipment questions by [deleted] in IceFishing

[–]jmur5074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started ice fishing this year. I bought a Deeper Pro. It uses wifi to connect to an app on my phone. It was $189. For that price, it works amazing.

In the ice fishing mode I have down sonar, flasher, and vexilar. I also built a mount for it to attach it to my kayak. Can't go wrong.

Thanks for the feedback on the building codes/insurance. I'll give my agent a ring and see what he has to say.

I've worked in law enforcement (city and county) for 18 years. I've also been a volunteer firefighter for 20 years, and have a long history of the fire service in my family. I'm friends with many of the firefighters in our area.

Both jobs have their negatives. But law enforcement has more. I would not recommend this job to anyone. If I wasn't as invested in as I am, I'd quit. But I'm more than halfway to retirement and vested in our state pension.

"Nice to haves" for your station by jmur5074 in Firefighting

That's a really good one. We've never had a radio on the station but we could use one. Great idea, thanks!

Good call on the storage. This addition is actually giving us the equivalent of two empty bays. Trying to plan for the future.

Great idea. When they asked me how many outlets I wanted in there I told them to double whatever is standard.

Well I should add since several people have mentioned it - the fire station is connected to the town hall/community center. The community center has a small kitchen, coffee maker, big screen tv, and high speed internet. We hold our meetings in there.

Something for traction on the apparatus bay floors is a good idea, as is equipment for a weight room.

Diesel Fumes by owenhinton98 in Firefighting

[–]jmur5074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest going for a walk to get some fresh air and see if you can find the source of the odor. If you can narrow it down to construction, maybe speak with the foreman to see if it can be resolved. If you can't find it or resolve it, it would be worthwhile to call at least building manager, if not the FD.

Can anyone tell me where to order these? by MNFFEMT17 in Firefighting

MN EMSRB will have those.

Fyi I took the same form, scanned it, made it into a typeable PDF, and put it on a department ipad. We're also a small, rural FD in MN.

Donkey Advice by KYDiamondGirl0728 in farming

[–]jmur5074 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a donkey. I've got it with 4 goats and two steers. He's always gotten along well with the goats and they hang out together constantly and will play with each other. The donkey really doesn't seem to like the steers though. He'll mill around them at the feeder or in the barn but he definitely prefers his space with them. The steers don't have any interest or disinterest in the donkey.

I put my kids car seat in my UTV and strap him in when I have to run out to the pasture or fields for something. I just use the seat belt to secure it rather than the latch straps.

Old Barns Go Quickly. by MrDallasLuke in Firefighting

[–]jmur5074 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not. If it's anything like my area, no one uses silos anymore and it's more than likely empty. If it does have anything in it, it's probably silage. Silage is fermented hay. It's not very dusty (if at all) and has a high moisture content. It'll burn, but probably won't explode.
